Hidden Gems: Meet Josh Webber of Big Red Jelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Webber.

Hi Josh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In the world of creative agencies, there’s a lot of “fluff”—bloated budgets, ambiguous strategies, and processes that feel more like a maze than a roadmap. In 2017, three brothers—Josh, Zach, and Ben Webber—decided there was a better way. They didn’t start in a high-rise office in Manhattan or a tech hub in Silicon Valley. They started in a pool house in Orem, Utah.

This is the story of Big Red Jelly, and how a “hobby” between brothers transformed into one of the fastest-growing creative and growth agencies in the United States.

The Origin: Efficiency in Nature

The name “Big Red Jelly” isn’t just a quirky brand choice; it’s a philosophy. In 2003, scientists discovered the Tiburonia granrojo, or the Big Red Jellyfish. At the time, it was noted as one of the most energy-efficient creatures on the planet. For the Webber brothers, this was the perfect mascot. They wanted to build an agency that mirrored that efficiency—cutting away the “fat” of traditional advertising to provide world-class branding and growth services that were practical, transparent, and results-driven.

In those early days, the team was lean. Josh handled the business development, Zach—who had a knack for Adobe—became the lead designer, and Ben dove into the world of Google Analytics and SEO. They took every job they could find: business cards, interactive PDFs, and small websites. But even then, the core value was clear: Applied Creativity.

The Pivot: From “Doing it All” to “Brand, Build, Grow”

For the first few years, Big Red Jelly grew steadily, moving from the pool house to its first official office. But the real turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the world slowed down, the Webber brothers noticed a recurring problem: businesses were pouring money into paid ads (Marketing) without having a solid Brand or a functional Website (Build). They were trying to run before they could walk.

This realization led to the birth of their signature Brand, Build, Grow process.

Brand: Establish a captivating, researched-backed identity.

Build: Create a world-class website integrated with the best digital tools.

Grow: Implement a proactive growth strategy that includes sales enablement and marketing.

By niching down into this foundational “pre-marketing” space, Big Red Jelly didn’t just survive the pandemic—they exploded.

Scaling to the Top: Inc. 5000 and Beyond

Today, Big Red Jelly is a far cry from the three-man operation in a pool house. The agency now boasts a team of over 20+ strategists and has helped over 2,000 businesses worldwide—from local startups to global brands like Savory Fund and Parkway Construction.

Their meteoric rise hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2025, Big Red Jelly was named to the Inc. 5000 Regionals: Rocky Mountain list, ranking as the #32 fastest-growing company in Utah. This prestigious recognition followed a median growth rate of 106% for companies on the list, proving that their “efficiency-first” model was exactly what the modern market needed.

5 Stars Across the Board

What truly sets Big Red Jelly apart isn’t just their growth—it’s their reputation. In an industry where client retention can be fickle, Big Red Jelly maintains a 5-star rating across the board on platforms like Clutch, Google, and The Manifest. They have been recognized as a “Clutch Global Champion” and a “Top Branding Firm” by 50Pros.

Clients often point to the “Michelin Star” experience: the feeling of working with a boutique agency that offers the power and results of a global powerhouse. Whether they are working with a dental practice in Massachusetts or an e-commerce brand in Europe, the mission remains the same: to inspire creativity and growth.

The Future: The Growth Flywheel

As Big Red Jelly looks toward the future, they are moving beyond the traditional “funnel” mentality. They are pioneering the “Growth Flywheel”—a holistic approach where brand management, marketing, and sales enablement work in perfect harmony to create sustainable, long-term momentum.

From a backyard pool house to the Inc. 5000, Big Red Jelly has proven that when you combine applied creativity with extreme efficiency, there is no limit to how far you can grow. As CEO Josh Webber puts it, “We’re just getting started.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While the growth of Big Red Jelly has been meteoric, the road from an Orem pool house to the Inc. 5000 was far from a straight line. Like any startup, the agency faced significant “growing pains” and several pivotal moments where they had to reinvent themselves to survive.

Here are some of the primary struggles and hurdles they faced along the way:

1. The “Saying Yes to Everything” Phase

In the early days (2017–2018), the Webber brothers faced the classic startup struggle: cash flow. To keep the lights on, they took any job that came their way—from $50 business cards and interactive PDFs to social media management and complex web builds.

The Struggle: This “generalist” approach led to a lack of focus. They were spread thin, trying to be experts in everything for everyone, which made it difficult to build a scalable process or a premium brand identity for themselves.

2. The COVID-19 Reality Check

When the pandemic hit in 2020, many of their clients—primarily small businesses—suddenly froze their budgets. The agency had to face the reality that if they stayed a “full-service digital marketing agency,” they were a luxury that could be easily cut.

The Struggle: They realized that while they were doing good work, their clients often lacked a solid foundation. They were running ads for broken websites and inconsistent brands.

The Pivot: This was a painful period of internal restructuring where they shifted away from “doing everything” to their specific Brand, Build, Grow model. They had to say “no” to traditional, ad-only contracts to focus on the foundational work they knew would actually drive long-term results.

3. Scaling the “Brotherhood” Culture

Moving from three brothers in a room to a team of 20+ strategists presented a major cultural and operational hurdle.

The Struggle: In the beginning, the “process” was just in the brothers’ heads. As they hired, they faced the challenge of “operationalizing” their creativity. Josh Webber often speaks about the struggle of transitioning from being the doers (writing every line of code or designing every logo) to being the leaders who empower a team to do the same at a world-class level.

The Solution: This led to their hyper-fixation on “Efficiency” (the jellyfish philosophy) and the creation of their 10-chapter “Proven Process” to ensure that as they grew, the quality didn’t dilute.

4. Overcoming the “Budget Competition”

In the crowded creative agency space, Big Red Jelly often found themselves competing against “budget” freelancers on one side and “bloated” traditional agencies on the other.

The Struggle: Early on, it was difficult to convince clients that “efficiency” didn’t mean “cheap” and “creativity” didn’t have to mean “expensive.” They had to fight for their position in the market, proving that a boutique, high-touch agency could deliver better results than a global giant without the “fluff” and hidden fees common in the industry.

5. Managing Global Complexity

As they expanded to working with clients around the world, they faced the logistical hurdles of time zones, varying market standards, and diverse cultural branding needs. Moving from local Utah projects to working with international brands required a massive leap in project management and communication tools.

The Result of the Struggle

These challenges are ultimately what forged the agency into what it is today. By facing the “fluff” of the industry and the instability of the pandemic head-on, they didn’t just grow—they became more resilient. Today, those early struggles are the reason they emphasize transparency, efficiency, and a solid foundation above all else. As the team likes to say, “Only entropy comes easy”—everything else requires the hard work they put in during those early years.

We’ve been impressed with Big Red Jelly, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Big Red Jelly, we are more than just a creative agency—we are strategic growth partners. We specialize in helping businesses build a “foundation for growth” before they spend a single dollar on traditional marketing.

Here is everything you should know about who we are, what we do, and what truly sets us apart in the creative industry.

What We Do & Our Specializations

We are known for our trademarked Brand, Build, Grow process. While most agencies focus on just one piece of the puzzle (like only ads or only web design), we bridge the gap between creative identity and technical execution.

Brand: We specialize in “Applied Creativity.” This isn’t just about a pretty logo; it’s about Brand DNA, messaging, and research-backed positioning that attracts your ideal customer.

Build: We build world-class, high-conversion websites on platforms like WordPress, Wix, and Shopify. Our “Build” phase is unique because we focus on integrating the right online tools and automations (CRMs, scheduling, e-commerce) to make your business run more efficiently.

Grow: Once the foundation is solid, we implement a proactive growth strategy. This includes SEO, digital advertising, and sales enablement, creating a “Growth Flywheel” that gains momentum over time.

What Sets Us Apart

In a sea of “bloated” agencies with ambiguous processes, we stand out for several key reasons:

Extreme Efficiency: Inspired by our namesake, the Tiburonia granrojo (Big Red Jellyfish), we have spent years perfecting a “Proven Process” that is lean, transparent, and practical.

USA-Based Experts: We don’t outsource our core work. Our team of strategists, designers, and developers is based entirely in the US, ensuring high-touch collaboration and clear communication.

Tool Integration: We don’t just “design” a site; we “engineer” it. We are experts at connecting your digital presence to the tech stack that powers your business, from HubSpot to advanced e-commerce integrations.

Weekly Collaboration: We don’t hide behind screens. We meet with our clients weekly, treating our partnership as a collaborative “Discovery Tour” rather than a black-box service.

Brand Wins We Are Most Proud Of

Brand-wise, we take immense pride in our 5-star reputation across Google, Clutch, and The Manifest. Being recognized on the Inc. 5000 Regionals as the #32 fastest-growing company in Utah (2025) was a major milestone, validating that our focus on quality and efficiency resonates with the market.

However, we are most proud of the transformations we see in our clients. Whether it’s helping a local dentist’s office become a community staple or supporting a global franchise like Savory Fund in their expansion, seeing a brand “graduate” from a disorganized startup to a market leader is our ultimate metric of success.

What We Want Readers to Know

If there is one thing we want you to take away, it’s this: Marketing works best when your foundation is strong. Too many companies waste budgets on ads before their brand is clear or their website is optimized.

At Big Red Jelly, our mission is to inspire creativity and growth by giving you that foundation. We believe that world-class branding and growth services shouldn’t be reserved for companies with million-dollar budgets—they should be accessible, transparent, and results-driven for every ambitious business.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was definitely what you’d call the “high-energy” kid. I was born in New Zealand but spent my formative years here in Utah, and I think that blend of Kiwi grit and Utah’s entrepreneurial spirit really shaped who I am today.

If I had to sum up my younger self in one word, it would be curious. I wanted to know how everything worked, why people made the decisions they did, and how I could make things better. That curiosity didn’t always lead me down the straightest path—I’ll be the first to admit I got into my fair share of trouble. I had a bit of a rebellious streak, but I always had this internal compass that told me to perform where it mattered. I knew that if I was going to push the boundaries, I had to back it up with results in the classroom, on the field, and in my work.

Sports were a massive part of my life and a huge outlet for that energy. I ended up playing college rugby, and that experience was foundational for me. Rugby is a game of pure intensity and teamwork; it taught me how to take a hit, get back up, and keep moving the ball forward. It’s a culture where you don’t just play for yourself; you play for the person standing next to you.

That leads into a philosophy that I carry into Big Red Jelly every single day: “Be the best at everything that requires zero talent.”

Growing up, I realized I might not always be the smartest person in the room or the most naturally gifted athlete on the pitch, but no one was going to outwork me. Being on time, having a great attitude, putting in the extra effort, being obsessed with the details—those things don’t require “talent,” they require discipline. I’ve always believed that if you master those “zero talent” traits, you create a foundation that makes success inevitable.

Today, that same drive is what fuels my love for growing and building things. Whether it’s a physical project or, more importantly, building this agency, I get a genuine thrill out of taking an idea and turning it into a living, breathing organization. For me, Big Red Jelly isn’t just a business; it’s the ultimate expression of that lifelong curiosity and the “work hard, play hard” mentality I’ve had since I was a kid in the Utah dirt.
