Hidden Gems: Meet Joshua Hall of Salt Lake Animal Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Hall.

Hi Joshua, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
First let me tell you about my journey from humans to canines, as well as some of the ups and downs that led me to this point. I didn’t really know what I “wanted to be when I grew up”. In my early 20’s I ran a community center and helped youth and adults get out of gangs. I really enjoyed the helping and serving aspect. It paid nothing and life eventually forced me to move on. I started going to school and was working on my bachelor’s in business administration and working for a large financial corporation when I realized that corporate America wasn’t going to fulfill my needs. I truly enjoyed helping and serving others and I realized that for me personally, I couldn’t fulfill that need here. I shadowed a physical therapist and felt this would be a great fit for me. Here I could have a great career and help others at the same time.

In December 2014, I graduated from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I enjoyed working in the outpatient orthopedic and athletic population. I went on to become board certified in Orthopedics, dry needling, blood flow restriction training, and pain neuroscience. I got to work with your everyday athletes as well as some semiprofessional, professional, and Olympic athletes. I enjoyed being a PT, but I saw a serious problem. Working in the insurance-based world there was a high demand to see more patients per hour. It was clearly obvious it wasn’t about what was best for the client. There was a high demand to be productive and many PTs were taking their paperwork home. It quickly led to burnout. I knew I didn’t want to do this forever and I knew I always wanted to be my own boss.

In July 2018, after a couple years of studying and preparation, I began my own human practice, Hall PT. It was a cash-based practice where I spent an hour with each client. I enjoyed it, but my heart was pulling me in another direction. I was sitting at a business coaching conference with my buddy Francisco Maia, The K9PT, and he said “a year from now you will be treating only dogs.” It took me a bit longer but he was 100% spot on. In early 2019 I began the process of getting my CCRT. But due to the pandemic things were delayed. I had completed the first couple courses and had spent time with a vet locally, thus I had met all the Utah state requirements to practice animal physical therapy. In the middle of the pandemic a friend called and said “Josh, they have given Mylo 3 months to live. He’s walking like an umpa lumpa. Please help!” I treated her dog and things went so well she started telling all her friends and family. People started calling and in July 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, Salt Lake Animal Physical Therapy was born. In 2021, I was finally able to finish the CCRT.

Salt Lake Animal Physical Therapy brings a unique approach to treating its animal clients, most of which currently consist of dogs. We bring a hands-on manual therapy approach while focusing on neuro components, and of course, improving strength and function. We don’t rush our clients but spend an hour with each of them. Tell me where else you find this in the animal medicine world. We value building relationships with our pet parents and treat each animal as if they were our own. Our service is second to none and if you need proof just check out our google reviews.

In 2021, I decided to shut down my human practice and focus on the animals because I love them so much and there is such a need for more good animal physical therapists. So here we are today. It’s me and a client manager. We are looking to add another animal physical therapist. We are growing and will continue to grow. This is a tremendous opportunity for someone that wants to come along on this journey with us.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. There has been many obstacles and challenges along the way. Animal Physical Therapy is a relatively new field compared to many others. When you do something, new people don’t always understand it or approve it. There have been certain obstacles, such as others in the animal world not agreeing and opposing animal physical therapy, or simply not realizing its incredible value. There has also been the challenge of the pandemic and the business roadblocks and overall fear that it brought. No matter the obstacle it is always important to remember why you do what you do, for the love of the animals, and stay true to one’s own path.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
