Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Martinez.
Hi Juan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From very early on, I realized I was into music and rock music specifically. I remember my parents arriving home with a used copy of Guitar Hero, and me dedicating hours upon hours to passing the game in every possible difficulty. This awakened a need for me to translate the feeling into something real so I started looking for bands to join.
In the 7th grade, I joined my first formal band but never had any gigs or played anywhere live. It would be until the 10th grade that I would get my first show with a different band.
All these experiences of traveling to nearby cities to do shows and just the feeling of playing in general and seeing people enjoy and vibe with your music further solidified the belief that I had to dedicate myself to music.
Currently, I work with different bands in different capacities and have traveled to over 13 states. Not a whole lot, but miles away from that 7th grader with no gigs. Hopefully, in the future I will be able to look back at my current position in the same way I look at myself in the 7th grade.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, many things have made it more difficult and ultimately a learning experience.
Teams dissolve, people leave, falling outs happen, and people have less discipline or higher expectations than you want or can provide at the moment. Humans are complicated. On the same leg, our relationships and even more so, our working relationships are incredibly complex.
The biggest struggle was definitely financial. The arts are not often well paid or even properly rewarded so the financial aspect of things is often the highest mountain to climb.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business, CLX Media Group, is a parent company that i formed early on to encompass all the things that I felt I wanted to do or had the idea of doing in the future.
Currently, CLX Media Marketing, and Take 5 Records are the 2 “Brands” that are currently operational.
I specialize in non-conventional methods of advertising and sales consultations.
I remember reading about red bull using empty cans around trash cans in Austria to create the illusion of people purchasing the product. I thought it was very interesting so I decided to form a marketing firm that focused on doing things like that. More “outside the box” marketing campaigns as well as traditional campaigns if the client requires them.
The thing I’m most proud of brand-wise is, funny enough, the coherence in logos. All the brands under the CLX Media Group umbrella contain some sort of snake in the logos. It’s a neat little detail.
One thing that the readers should know is that I can elevate your business and work 1 on 1 with you to achieve realistic goals based entirely on the budget that you have. Feel free to ask!
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is about trust.
There is a very fine balance between trusting too much and having people take advantage of you, and not trusting anyone and wanting to take on every task by yourself.
You must learn to trust others to handle things in which you are incompetent, but must also vet those who truly wish to grow with you from those that only want to further themselves.
