Hidden Gems: Meet Justin Turley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Turley.

Hi Justin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I will briefly go through some of the events of my life after high school.

The last year I played school basketball was my sophomore year in high school. I never played varsity ball. After high school, I decided I wanted to play basketball in college, which was going to be difficult, since I didn’t play in high school.

I ended up meeting a part-time recruiter for the local college in my town, the College of Southern Idaho, which was always a very good and competitive program as they recruit players from all over the world. Long story short, I ended up making the CSI basketball team which was the #2 ranked Jr. College basketball team in the nation at the time, and played with them for a season. Making that team taught me that I really can do anything if I put my mind to it, am willing to put in the work, and am willing to make the sacrifices.

A few years later, I helped start my first business with some of my family members. It was a self-serve frozen yogurt shop. I was 22 years old at the time and was tasked with running the store. A year and a half later we opened our second store in the same town. Sometime after that, I started a hardwood flooring business since I worked on hardwood floors all through high school.

After running both of those businesses for a few years, we sold the yogurt store, I sold my flooring business, I went back to school and got a job at the nuclear waste site here in Idaho Falls, ID. I finished my degree in Healthcare Administration at BYU-Idaho, and started applying to anything that was applicable to my degree, and even many positions that were not. I wanted to move up and get my career going.

The problem was since I didn’t have much experience in the healthcare field, I couldn’t even get an interview for the positions I wanted. It was at that time I decided I would once again, hire myself.

At 30 years old I quit working out at the site, which is pretty unheard of, and I started a business specializing in crime and trauma scene cleanup and hoarding cleanup. I started my first location here in Idaho Falls, ID, and a second location in Albuquerque, NM later that year in 2018. In October of 2018, my brother and I then purchased a business in Lehi, Utah that specialized in inspecting and cleaning city sewer lines and storm drains.

A year later, I started another business flipping homes in the Blackfoot and Pocatello, ID areas. Another year later my brother and I started another business specializing in re-lining old residential sewer lines, and another business that buys and holds commercial real estate.

I am doing what I have always wanted to do, which was to have multiple streams on income, and be managing multiple businesses.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a completely smooth road. We have times where things seem to be going well and falling into place, and other times it seems we just can’t catch a break. My biggest obstacle is hiring good employees who will stick around and do a good job.

I started my Albuquerque business with two cousins that were living there at the time. They both ended up quitting and moving away six months after starting the business. I found myself having a business three states away that I now had to manage and get going. It has been a difficult road, but I now have a good team there and will be selling the business soon.

Each business has its own challenges, but we take each challenge head-on and do what we need to do to find a solution and keep things going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bio-One, PipeView, Pipe Repair Services, and Turley Enterprises?
It is hard to pick just one business to talk about. Bio-One, the biohazard cleanup business, has been interested in owning and running. I have learned so much from this business and have enjoyed helping people when they are in great need.

PipeView is the Utah business my brother and I purchased in October of 2018. We have more than tripled in size and was featured in a national magazine called, Cleaner Magazine in May of this year. We are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish with this business. We are expanding our capabilities and will eventually expand with more locations.

Pipe Repair Services is the sewer re-lining business. We started it about a year and a half ago. I haven’t pushed it very much until fairly recently, and it is really starting to grow. What is so great about this business, is we were able to identify a pretty big need in the area, and started a business to address that need. The only competition we have is another bigger business that usually digs up lines to replace them completely, which usually costs about double what we charge, and we don’t have to dig up the yard to do it.

Turley Enterprises is a home-flipping business. We have flipped eleven homes in the two years it has been running, and recently purchased our 12th, and 13th, and 14th homes to flip. It can be very challenging as most of the time we are buying a house without completely knowing what is wrong with it and what work will need to be done, but this has been one of my favorite businesses to have.

What do you think about luck?
Whenever I hear someone tell me how lucky I am, I usually respond with, “It’s funny, the harder I work, the luckier I get.” Not saying that some success doesn’t come from a little bit of luck.

But I do believe that if someone is willing to put their head down and work hard and smart, even bad luck won’t stop them from accomplishing what they are trying to do.
