Hidden Gems: Meet Lexie Forbes of Story Room Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexie Forbes.

Hi Lexie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since I was 12 years old, I loved creating. I loved singing, dancing, acting, guitar, art, anything that I could put my heart and soul into is what I was and am all about. My best friend and I would always create music videos with songs we had written for them, we would write screenplays and make movies and watch them on the big screen in my home theater. I always thought I would grow up to be in the spotlight like being a famous singer or actor. Right before covid, I went to Europe to teach English and wanted to buy a video camera to document all of my fun adventures. I started creating travel vlogs and had so much fun editing them on iMovie. The pandemic hit before I was supposed to come home so just to be safe, they cut our trip short and sent us back to the united states. When I got back I realized that I could turn this hobby of mine into a career. I began listening to podcasts, finding mentors, watching all the Youtube videos I could get my hands on and eventually sold my average video camera for a more professional set of gear. My first wedding was my best friends. It was the best feeling to capture her wedding day and be able to edit it. It gave me so much joy. I felt that I should not be getting paid for doing something I loved this much. I eventually started to reach a point where I started landing quite a few jobs and quit my job as a furniture saleswoman. From there I landed jobs like short documentaries, births, love stories, businesses with a purpose, and I am just thrilled to be where I am. This is not just a job for me, it’s a calling. It is my duty and joy in this life to portray people’s stories and help them reveal them to the world. The relationships I have made thus far give me an indescribable amount of joy and I just appreciate these beautiful humans for allowing my into their world to create a moving picture that they have for safe keeping, or release into the world. I love and appreciate all my clients who I now consider friends and will have those relationships and memories with me throughout my entire life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think for anyone, imposter syndrome can set in very easily. No matter how successful you are, there are times where you feel you are not good enough and you should give up. I am guilty of this. I often find myself comparing my own personal journey to that of others, but I know that it is not true because if it was, I would have no business or clients to begin with. I definitely find myself considering giving up and moving on to work for someone else because “entrepreneurship is not for me” but I know that if i listened and acted on those thoughts, I would never allow myself to fully grow, develop, and become the dream filmmaker that I strive to be. It just takes time and my journey is MY journey.

We’ve been impressed with Story Room Media, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Story Room Media takes pride in creating connections, building bonds, and creating memories that last forever. I create special films that tell your story in a way that can accurately and artistically represent you and the message you want to get across. I specialize in warm, under the stars, touchy feely, messy hair, barefoot kind of films, although I do film corporate work, births, interview, and creative films as well.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned to slow down. During the pandemic was actually right when I started my business. Luckily it happened to my advantage. More people were finding ways to elope and put on smaller more intimate weddings which is what I love and specialize in filming. From a personal perspective, I learned the importance of self-care and slowing down. Not subscribing to the fast paced lifestyle we all too often get caught up in. I also learned to laze in the small, often underappreciated moments. Through learning these things I started my spiritual journey which for me, is all about being slow, and taking time to express gratitude for all things big and small and getting into nature and stepping back from social media and comparison.
