Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Johnson.
Hi Mackenzie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In May 2021, I decided to quit work as a CPA, work I had been doing for the past 8+ years.
While accounting made ends meet and was good to me, it certainly wasn’t something I was passionate about. I intended to be a full-time mom after quitting, but once I quit work and had a little room to breathe my creative mind finally had a chance to turn on. A few months after quitting I felt like I had an aha moment while making almond butter in my kitchen.
I loved adding different herbs and spices and blending different nuts. The combinations are endless really. I wished there was something on the market like what I was making at home. I realized there really isn’t anything on the market like what I was making.
I thought, “Hey, why don’t I do it???” I’ve always wanted to have my own business and be my own boss and thought it was too good an idea not to pursue. With a lot of work, Kestrel Kitchen launched its products online in May 2022 and has been selling at farmers’ markets this summer, and plan to be in stores in the upcoming months.
The response to our products has been amazing. It’s so satisfying to hear how much people are enjoying the products you’ve worked so hard to put into the world. My favorite thing is to have a customer come back the next week and stock up because they loved their first jar so much.
I’m loving this journey of entrepreneurship and am enjoying every minute of it. I can’t wait to see where we’ll be one, or five years down the road.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s definitely not been the smoothest road. Starting a business from scratch in an industry you know little about has had so many challenges.
The food industry has many laws and regulations that I had to research and figure out. For example, I originally thought I could just make my product at home and was a little disappointed when I realized I wouldn’t be able to do that. I now rent out space in a commercial kitchen to make our nut butter which works out great and allows me to create our product but isn’t as easy as I had originally thought.
With each challenge that comes along, I’ve learned it’s okay to ask for help from friends and family and to stay positive when you hit unexpected bumps.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kestrel Kitchen Premium Nut Butter?
Kestrel Kitchen crafts globally-inspired, gourmet nut butter, both sweet and savory, and somewhere in between. We seek out and use only the freshest nuts and spices in our hand-crafted spreads.
We don’t do stabilizers and we don’t do preservatives. Every nut is roasted to perfection in small batches and ground in-house to deliver a superior taste. You can buy online anytime. We ship nationwide and offer free local pickup.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
As part of our mission to “spread love” we think it appropriate to help those who don’t have access or education to the nutritious food we are so passionate about.
We feel so blessed to be able to afford the beautiful food we eat every day. World hunger is far from solved, and while there are many problems that need addressing in our world, hunger is one that is so basic to human development and joy that we feel strongly about giving back in this way.
We give 10% of our profits to feeding and educating those in poverty around the world.
