Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariela Lopez.
Hi Mariela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I always knew that the beauty industry was for me. After high school, I enrolled in cosmetology school thinking I’d be doing hair for the rest of my life. But after discovering brows, I was hooked. For 6 years, I built my clientele through my ability to retain connections with clients who always left my chair happy and would come back even more happy to see me again.
During that time, I would continuously be shouted out for my top performance in services and sales while doing brows at a corporate retailer. My desire to open my own business came after I had my son and even though I knew it would be really scary, it felt like that was what I needed to do. 3 months ago, I decided to jump the gun and open my own brow business.
Fast forward to today, I can say that was the best decision I could have made. I continue to work hard every day to show myself and others, that it is possible to do whatever you set your mind to do. I strive to perfect my skill, maintain a professional image, as well as delivering the best results to my clients.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been some downsides to building my way to where I am at today. One of them was that I had to miss out on a lot of family events or outings with friends due to my working all the time.
But I look back now and I am grateful that happened before having my son. I always had a vision of how I wanted my life to be when I had my children. Now having my first child I know how to have balance in my home and work life.
We’ve been impressed with Brows by Mariela, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been in the brow industry for about 7 years. Waxing brows became my passion after discovering how satisfying, yet rewarding it was to have a client look in the mirror after I’d finish and knowing that could make them smile and feel good. I currently offer brow waxing, tinting, tweezing, laminations, and lash lifts. I like to differentiate myself from others by treating all my clients as close friends.
I want to ensure that they feel comfortable not only by being in my chair but also them being able to speak up and tell me what they like or don’t like. I am proud of myself for learning how to make things happen even though it can be super scary.
This was always a vision in my head that I would one day be my boss and now having that be my reality and everyday life, it is such an amazing feeling. To anyone that has a vision, don’t be afraid to take the leap because you will never know what the future will hold for you.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I would like to continue growing my clientele even more than I have now.
The money is always good but I also really enjoy meeting new people and just hearing out their stories. Maybe one day, I will offer training and have my salon, as well as a line of brow products. Lately, I’ve been wanting to try other beauty services but even if I do I don’t think I’ll ever stop doing brows.
