Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Cancilla
Hi Mark, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for building started at an early age. I was raised in a double-wide trailer in California that my dear mother had turned into a version of the Winchester Mystery House, due to the fact that she was always adding rooms to it. As a child, I always wanted to help the carpenters.
I entered the industry as soon as I could drive, starting by picking up garbage on job sites. I worked my way up the construction ladder, eventually becoming a framer, finishing carpenter, and foreman for a custom home builder in California. Over the years, and after starting a family, I decided to move to Utah. After settling into Utah County and developing relationships with homeowners through my hands-on services in framing and finish carpentry, I discovered a recurring issue: contractors misleading clients, taking their money, and never returning! This unfortunate situation seemed to be happening more and more. It’s shameful and tarnishes the reputation of honorable contractors, which I believe contributed to the rise of DIYers—creating a whole new set of housing problems!
I wanted to step in and be a builder for the people.
I truly love this industry, particularly the remodeling world! My goal is to empower homeowners through my building process and management skill sets. With constant communication regarding scheduling, budgets, and expectations, my team and I can create not only an excellent product but also a reasonable, peaceful experience—at least as peaceful as remodeling can be while your home is under construction.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Home remodeling is not an easy craft, and the biggest struggle is the intense competition within the industry, with unqualified tradesmen posing as craftsmen. These individuals may or may not have a license and often lack the experience necessary to take on projects that could potentially cause damage and harm to one of your biggest investments—your home!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We have specialized in framing and finish carpentry for 40 years, and now we are offering construction management services. Whether you’re looking to add an addition to your home, create outdoor living space, or complete a remodel of your home’s interior—including the kitchen, bathroom, and basement—we’re happy to handle it all. Big or small, it’s just one call!
We have a building program and process I call the “Ronin Way,” where honor and integrity are only surpassed by exceptional communication. Our fantastic team is here to serve all your home needs and desires.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Trends and styles come and go over the years. I like to steer homeowners toward classic, timeless changes to their space—importantly, ensuring that it’s both comfortable and affordable.
I also love the idea of bringing the outdoors in and creating extra square footage.
