Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Dickey.
Hi Mark, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our story started in the 1970s, when 14-year-old David Dickey attended the Wurlitzer Sales School in Logan, Utah. Soon after, he began selling pianos and organs out of his mother’s shop, House of Originals, in Payson. His passion for music and natural ability in sales led to a full-time position at a respected music store in Orem, where he gained valuable industry experience and built relationships that would help shape his future.
Seeing David’s drive and potential, his father Lee Dickey joined forces with him to open a store of their own. With Price, Utah’s coal industry booming and a strong sense of community, they knew it was the perfect place to put down roots.
Lee’s Music quickly found success and eventually expanded to multiple locations across Utah. But as the business grew, David made a decision that would define the company’s future. Rather than continue expanding farther from home, he chose to focus on what mattered most: his family, his customers, and the community that had supported the business from the beginning.
After more than 30 years of almost exclusively selling pianos, the other music store in town that sold guitars, drums, and Band instruments went out of business, and we took over that part of the market. It began small, but is now a major part of the business, doing local sales and repair, as well as selling online around the country.
Today, Lee’s Music is proudly owned and operated by David, his wife Linda, and their son Mark, making it a true third-generation family business. While our reach now extends throughout the western United States through major piano sale events, our values remain rooted in the same small-town principles that built the company nearly five decades ago.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The music industry has always been a more difficult industry that is constantly changing. Things were booming when we originally opened but being in a small town, there are only so many customers for pianos and organs. So eventually we needed to start doing outside sale events in the surrounding 5 states. Which is a ton of work, but has been a major reason we’ve survived. Then of course the housing market crash in 2008 nearly put us out of business because we were primarily big ticket items that people were holding off on purchasing. Luckily that was the beginning of our efforts in the guitar side of the business which was much more accessible in challenging times.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lee’s Music of Utah. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Lee’s Music is a family-owned music store in Price, Utah, celebrating 50 years of helping people bring music into their lives. We carry pianos, guitars, band instruments, and accessories, with a particular focus on helping customers find the right instrument for their needs, goals, and budget.
Pianos are a big part of what we do—from acoustic grands and uprights to digital and player pianos. We offer new and used instruments, along with piano moving and delivery. We also take piano sales into communities outside our hometown, bringing a selection of instruments closer to people who might otherwise have to travel hours to compare them.
We’re proud to be a dealer for Baldwin, Pearl River, Kawai, Casio, Ibanez, Teton, Crafter, Amati, Stagg, and Levante. We choose the brands and instruments we carry with a clear purpose: giving our customers the best value for their money, not just making an easy sale. We look closely at quality, performance, and what each instrument offers at its price.
That care is what sets us apart. We want to offer the right quality at the right price, whether someone is buying their first instrument or choosing a piano they’ll enjoy for decades. The right instrument should support where you are now, give you room to grow, and inspire you to keep going.
That same approach shapes our student band rent-to-own program. We work to make dependable instruments accessible to families, with a practical path toward ownership.
What we’re most proud of is keeping that personal, family-business approach alive for 50 years. We take time to listen, explain the differences, and help people make a choice they feel good about. You don’t have to be an experienced musician to walk through our doors. Whether you’re just getting started, returning to music, or ready for something new, we’re here to help you find an instrument you’ll be excited to play.
