Hidden Gems: Meet Matteo Sogne of Matteo Ristorante Italiano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matteo Sogne

Hi Matteo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I came to Utah in 2016 on a swimming scholarship at the U. I have always loved restaurants and sharing the love and passion of food, so when I graduated in 2020 I have decided to put my degrees on hold and focus on my dream – bringing joy and togetherness through delicious food!
We opened Matteo in September 2023 alongside my mom, my dad, and my sister.
Our executive chef is my long time friend Damiano Carlotto.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. If you get any business owner that says it has, can you please give them my number?? I must know how ahaha.
We had a bunch of issues, between health department, DABS, and other stuff. But thankfully once we opened, things really smoothened out and it’s been amazing. Our staff makes all the difference in the world. We would not be here without their dedication and skills.
And now just to make it more challenging for us, we have decided to open up a little pasta/sandwich shop downtown – Strada by Matteo. But that is another story… 🙂

As you know, we’re big fans of Matteo Ristorante Italiano. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We specialize in offering delicious Italian food in a cozy, comfortable environment and laid back atmosphere.
I believe what sets us apart is the care and dedication to details, and the amazing staff we have. I cannot say enough how thankful I am for our team.
Especially in today’s word, it is so rare to have great service and great food at the same place, so I believe this is what really sets us apart.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been leaning towards a business mindset since I was a kid, and I very much enjoy running my own business.
I have always been a good student (good meaning I had good grades, not that I enjoyed studying… As a matter of fact I have a degree in Math and one in Econ cum laude, and now I am running a restaurant!)
I always grew up playing sports and it’s still a big part of my life.
