Hidden Gems: Meet McKay Whiting of A Team Property Improvement LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKay Whiting.

Hi McKay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Our story really started back in high school. We were a small crew of friends doing remodeling work, repairs, and odd jobs for people around the area. At the time, we were just working hard, figuring things out, and trying to do good work — but looking back, that was where we learned a lot of the skills and habits that still shape how we work today.

The name “A Team” actually came from one of our old bosses. We were his teenage crew, and he started calling us the “A Team” because we were the guys he could count on to show up, work hard, and get stuff done. It kind of stuck, and honestly, it still fits. We have always liked the idea of being the reliable crew people can call when they need something handled.

After doing that kind of work for a while, we realized we wanted to build something of our own. We had learned a ton through hands-on experience — remodeling, painting, drywall, fences, repairs, and all the random problem-solving that comes with property improvement — and we saw a real need for a local company that was easy to work with, communicated clearly, and actually followed through.

So that is what we are building now. A Team Property Improvement grew out of those early days of just saying yes, showing up, and learning as we went. We are still growing, still improving, and still keeping that same mindset: work hard, be straight with people, do solid work, and make the process as smooth as possible for the customer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been completely smooth. Like a lot of small service businesses, we have had to learn how to balance working in the business and building the business at the same time.

One of the biggest challenges has been creating consistency. In home repair and handyman work, every job is a little different. One day might be drywall and paint, the next day might be a fence repair, and the next might be an inspection correction list for a rental unit. That variety is part of what makes the work interesting, but it also means you need strong systems for estimating, communication, materials, scheduling, and handoffs.

Another challenge has been learning how to grow without losing quality. It is easy to say yes to every job, but we have learned that a good customer experience starts before the work ever begins. We try to understand the scope, set expectations, send rough pricing quickly, and make sure the customer knows what is included before we get too deep into the project.

We have also had to figure out marketing, bookkeeping, payroll, insurance, hiring, pricing, and all the behind-the-scenes pieces that customers do not see. Those things are not always glamorous, but they matter. A company that wants to last has to be built on more than just being handy.

The road has taught us to be humble, practical, and process-driven. Every job teaches us something — how to communicate better, estimate better, prepare better, or create a smoother experience for the next customer.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Team Property Improvement LLC?
A Team Property Improvement is a local handyman and property-improvement company serving Utah County. We help with the kinds of projects that homeowners, landlords, and property managers often need handled quickly and professionally: drywall repair, painting, trim and baseboard work, door and hardware repairs, fence construction and repair, caulking and weatherproofing, fixture swaps, rental turnover work, inspection correction lists, furniture assembly, TV mounting, and other small-to-medium home projects. We also have dedicated painting and fence divisions to round out our skillset.

We are especially focused on practical, high-trust work. A lot of customers do not need a huge remodel — they need someone who will answer, give them a realistic price, show up, solve the problem, and communicate clearly. That is where we try to stand out.

Our goal is to combine the flexibility of a handyman service with the professionalism of a real contractor. We care about clean communication, written estimates, clear scopes of work, before-and-after photos, organized scheduling, and follow-up after the job is done. We are licensed and insured, and we are continually building better systems so our customers get a smoother experience.

We are proud that our reviews often mention things like professionalism, punctuality, attention to detail, reasonable pricing, and the fact that we are willing to help with the smaller projects that still matter. To us, those details are the brand.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something people might not realize is that A Team started way before it was officially a business. The name was not created in a branding meeting or picked because it sounded good on a logo. It came from real job sites, back when we were still teenagers working together and learning the trade. Our old boss called us the “A Team” because we were the crew he could count on to show up and get things done, and the name just stuck.

Another thing people might not know is how much time we spend thinking about the business side behind the scenes. From the outside, people mostly see the finished fence, the fresh paint, or the repaired drywall. But we are also constantly working on systems — estimating, scheduling, follow-up, photos, training, customer communication, and making the whole process smoother. We care a lot about the craft, but we also care about building a company that is organized, dependable, and built to last.

So the surprising part might be that even though our work is very hands-on, we are pretty intentional about the bigger picture. We are not just trying to stay busy. We are trying to build something solid.
