

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitch Moncur.
Mitch, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Denny, my grandfather, started the shop in 1963 in Kearns. He moved that shop to our Riverton location in 1983. My dad, Darrin, started working at the Riverton shop in 1987 and became Denny’s partner in 1993. I started working at the shop in 2010. I became the shop’s first master technician, since Denny, in 2015. After becoming a master technician, I decided to learn more about the front of the house part of the business and became a service manager in 2018. I had a deal to buy Denny out of the business in 2020, however he passed away before I could buy him out. I became Darrin’s partner in 2021. I launched a leadership development program for our teammates in 2020. This created 4 leaders within the shop which created an internal demand for leadership positions in the shop. This lead us to purchasing the Draper store to give new leaders the opportunities they were seeking.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Opening the Draper shop has been the hardest thing I have ever done in my career. We experienced retained employee turmoil and turnover when we took over the Draper shop. We had a different business plan than the previous owner did and it has taken significant time to crack into our target market. There were times I thought I would see chains and padlocks on the doors when I showed up for work at both shops. Financially it has been a struggle. Employee retention has been a struggle. All of the leaders we created in our leadership development group either moved out of state, quit, or were terminated for breaking company values. We had to create new leaders at a very rapid pace.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Denny’s Auto?
We are a three generation family owned and operated automotive maintenance and repair shop. We have an unmatched warranty of 3 years, unlimited miles but also offer tiered warranties to match our guests budget. We focus on forming partnerships with our guests, nobody is treated as a transaction. When we were creating our logo we reached out to our guests and asked them to describe us in three words. They all said Honesty, Family, and Integrity. If our guests said that about us and that is what we have consistently tried to build, it must be working. We offer monthly specials and host 2 to 4 car care clinics per year.
