Today we’d like to introduce you to Monte White.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Monte White, owner of Ski Trucks. I took over Ski Trucks in January of 2020, after my dad and Ski Trucks founder, Jeff White, became ill with cancer. He ultimately passed away in March of 2020.
My dad started Ski Trucks back in 1969 while attending university. He was a passionate skier and needed a way to support his young family. By the time he graduated, Ski Trucks was running well enough to be a viable business. And by the time I was born in 1976, Ski Trucks was doing very well in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. I started skiing from a young age, and I was fortunate enough to be around when snowboarding first came onto the scene in the 1980s.
Being in the mountains, especially during winter, has always been a great joy in life. I spent the first 19 years of my youth working for Ski Trucks, where I developed a deep passion for skiing, snowboarding, and all things outdoor enthusiast-related. Now that I’m older, I want to share that passion and encourage people to get out there with their Family and Friends and enjoy the mountains, nature, and winter sports activities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Taking the wheel from my dad has definitely been a challenge. I spent the first half of my life working at Ski Trucks, but running the show is an altogether different beast. Since losing my dad, so many things have changed, moving my family from Wyoming to Utah, walking away from an 18-years long career, selling the house I built for my family, that we were planning to retire in, and all along with a global pandemic. What a rollercoaster ride it’s been so far.
That all said, it’s been both an honor and a blessing taking over the family business. My dad was old school and did most of his business in his head, and on loose paper. Trying to get the business up-to-date and organized has been quite the challenge.
We’ve been impressed with Ski Trucks, Ski & Snowboard Warehouse, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ski Trucks’ mission is to make skiing and snowboarding more accessible and affordable. We love skiing and riding and want to share that passion with others. Despite the rising cost of gear and resorts, skiing and snowboarding doesn’t have to be an elitist sport reserved for the privileged. At Ski Trucks, we’re trying to offset this growing cost by providing affordable options to our customers.
What sets Ski Trucks apart is our massive selection of inventory and our pricing. Our most popular product has always been new and used ski and snowboard packages. We can mix and match new and used equipment, to get you into the right gear, that fits your budget. We get a lot of families who come through our doors, and the look of relief when they realize they can outfit their kids (and themselves!) affordably is priceless.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The future of the ski and snowboard industry has never been more uncertain, due in large part to climate change. I’m eternally optimistic, but it’s really hard to tell what the future holds for the industry and our planet.
With that said, we witnessed a surge in outdoor activity this last winter. Tired of being cooped up inside, it seems like people really got out there and reconnected with the outdoors. I think the pandemic reintroduced a lot of people to outdoor activities, and we’re hopeful that enthusiasm will carry over this season and going forward.
