Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Moreno.
Hi Oscar, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I (Bruce Sessions) retired from dentistry, after 31 years, in 2018. After a few months I decided to start a new business. After considering multiple options, I decided to start a fleet services business. We started the business in the spring of 2020 just as Covid-19 was starting. i am currently getting ready to retire again and my head technician (Oscar Moreno) will be buying the business. He is a young man from Venezuela and is here trying to learn how to succeed in the US. He is a very hard worker and has a great knowledge about vehicle repair. I think he has the x factor. he is learning how the think and act like a business owner. He will have his ups and downs. He is a real talent and i expect he will succeed. Time will tell.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We started the business in the Spring of 2020. That was the same time that Covid-19 was beginning to interrupt everything. Needless to say, it made out first year or so pretty interesting. As a small business just starting out, we had a difficult time finding employees and rounding up interested customers. we kept our expenses as low as we could and made the most of what opportunities presented themselves. Most of our income in the first years was reinvested back into supplies and tools.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Apex Fleet Services?
As our name suggests, we are a company whose niche is working with companies that have working fleet vehicles. So local tradesmen like plumbers, contractors, construction companies, moving companies etc are our target market. We also add the mobile portion where we can do roadside emergencies or onsite repairs and maintenance for these companies. We also work with national companies like Uhaul, Penske and others. The advantage we can give to our ongoing customers is that we are there for them when they need us whether it is an emergency or they just need us to come over and assess some issue at their location. Many times we can go out to a roadside breakdown to diagnose and repair the vehicle thus avoiding a costly tow. We have our own repair facility so we can assist in our shop, on the roadside or at the customer’s location based on what the need may be. Because we work with all sizes/makes of vehicles (and gasoline as well as diesel vehicles), our highly trained technicians really have an amazing breadth of knowledge and experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I was a dentist for 31 years prior to starting this business. I was having increasingly painful neck and lower back issues when I retired. When we (my wife and I) decided to start the business, it was completely outside of our experience and in reality, it was one of the scariest things we had endeavored to do. after 31 years of dentistry, we were comfortable financially, but I wanted to start a business, so we did. Anytime you go out on a limb and do something that felt like it had every chance to fail, you hope for the good fortune Gods are with you. I think often you create your own good or bad luck. I feel like we’ve had our share of both over the last 6 years. We have been fortunate to work with some great companies and are still plugging away after 6 years, so I think the good fortune as outweighed the bad.
