Hidden Gems: Meet Shelly Bernal And Siary Mendoza of Chicana Nails and Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Bernal And Siary Mendoza.

Hi Shelly Bernal and Siary Mendoza, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We officially opened our doors in 2022 as Chicana Nails and started offering nail services right after becoming licensed nail techs. We had an amazing opportunity to move into the same building as one of our mentors and it felt like a push from the universe to pursue our dreams of becoming nail technicians and business owners. In 2024, the building we were in was remodeled and we were able to expand to offer spa services and officially changed our name to Chicana Nails and Spa. As little girls, we always enjoyed the types of services that we now give, and we love being able to create a safe space for our community to enjoy them as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Time and funding have been the biggest obstacles we have had to overcome. After opening Chicana Nails in 2022, both of us decided to continue our education while continuing to grow the business. While Shelly already had her massage license, she decided to additionally pursue a business degree at UVU, and Siary expanded her expertise by becoming a master esthetician during this time.

In 2025, Shelly graduated business school and Siary became a licensed esthetics instructor. Both of these paths took up a lot of time and funding but have definitely paid off for our business because it allowed us to expand our connections and resources. For example, in 2023, Shelly was able to enter and win some funding from a UVU business competition that really helped with the expansion of the business in 2024.

As you know, we’re big fans of Chicana Nails and Spa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
