Hi Susan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started playing piano at age 3 and violin at age 5, and have never stopped playing, singing, and/or teaching since! I got my minor in music alongside earning my bachelor’s degree. I started teaching piano and violin in the early 2000’s when we lived in the Midwest. I started teaching again approximately 4 years ago here in Utah.
I’ve always loved figuring out how to help each individual student progress in their musical skills and in learning to love playing music. I love that music connects everyone. All of us from every background connect through music. We can all participate in music all through our lives, from babyhood up until death. Music is a universal joy.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The way students and teachers find each other has changed to be more online. During the Covid pandemic, I had to learn how to teach music online. It works surprisingly well, especially for piano, although I still think in person music lessons are best. It’s been a nice carryover to have my recitals be on Zoom as well. That means family members who aren’t close can still listen to their loved one perform.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Schreiner Studio has been teaching violin and piano students of all ages for 15 + years. I have played violin for 45 years and piano for 47 years. I love introducing beginning students to the joy of music, and helping intermediate/advanced students hone their skills.
I like to introduce our students to varied styles of music, and also teach basic music theory and ear training skills. I offer either in person lessons in our home in Roy, Utah, or online lessons from anywhere.
I am very patient and encouraging. I love to help music be accessible to anyone. Music is for all of us, even those of us who will likely just have music as a side part of our lives.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’re interested in teaching, jump in by doing. Volunteer to teach a friend or friend’s children. Figure out what works in how to teach by doing it. You’ll have your own style, and that’s fine.
Take advantage of all the free advertising possibilities online. Look up other people who are teaching. How do they advertise? That will give you ideas.
If you are thinking about learning to play music, I highly recommend it. It’s good for your brain and your psyche. Don’t be afraid you won’t be good enough. The amateur music community is very inclusive and encouraging. They just want more people to have the joy of music in their lives!
