Hidden Gems: Meet Susie McCarty of McCarty Talent Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susie McCarty.

Hi Susie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I learned a very strong work ethic by growing up on a farm in Riverton, Utah. My chores were gathering eggs, cleaning the chicken coop and bunny cages, feeding the pigs, milking the cows, pulling weeds, and doing whatever I was told to do.

When I was 13, we moved to Salt Lake City. My grandmother worked for Keith O’Brien’s, a classy department store downtown, at the time. It was my grandmother asking me to model in a fashion show for the store that started my life in modeling.

At the University of Utah, I met Lee Grosscup, All American Quarterback and first draft choice for the New York Giants. The fashion in New York City and the opportunity to do some runway shows there was the beginning of my education in the modeling business. Here it is almost 50 years later I am still in the modeling/ talent industry and helping to run a very successful business in Salt Lake City Utah.

I am proud of my accomplishments: Countless fashion show productions, 13 years of cabaret shows in the old Hilton Hotel on 500 South in the Room at the Bottom. Years of placing models in countless newspaper and magazine fashion ads. Our talented actors in major movies, national and local commercials, industrials, and voiceovers.

Also, my working relationship with my staff: Michelle, Benjamin, Shelley, Nygelle, and Mary Anne, along with the talent and the clients who hire our talent. I am most proud of my daughters Kimah and Stephanee, my grandchildren Genevieve, Gabriel, Keevah, and Kimera… most grateful and thankful to them all.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Juggling motherhood with full-time work I had to make adjustments for being away from my daughters and trying to involve them without interrupting their home and school life while working at getting my business up and running.

The learning curve required to keep up with the information age has been a challenge, from in-person to phone, to online booking and rates. My staff became instrumental in the evolution from in-person to online casting because of their knowledge of technology.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At McCarty Talent Agency we specialize in booking actors, models, and kids for commercials, voiceovers, movies, industrial films, fashion photography, and runway shows.

We have placed models in all the major markets which include New York, LA, Milan, Paris, and England. Our actors have working careers in LA and NY.

We are known for having the best-experienced actors, models, and professional kids in the business, which is proof of our reputation as being one of the most reputable, honest, hard-working agencies in the business.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I was so excited about my vision of opening the first modeling and acting agency in Utah, that risk never entered my mind. I had no fear, I knew I could do it, people did not intimidate me.

My goal was to have one of the best talent agencies that could compete with the best that was already established in major markets like New York, Milan, Paris, etc.
