Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Johnson.
Hi Todd, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Sandy, UT. Attended Jordan High School. I have been an entrepreneur most of my life. I started like a lot of kids out cutting grass and doing yard work to earn a few bucks. Worked at a grocery store and a formalwear shop in high school. My childhood friends dad was a plumber so we spent time working with him and after High school I went to the community college and became a journeyman plumber. I worked with a few plumbing contractors and when the economy took a turn around 2009 I attempted to do my own thing again. I tried doing some hot shot transportation and after a while of that I tired of the long hours and overwhelming costs that came with it. I again went back to the construction world. I enjoy learning new things and taking on challenges so I worked in the Fiber optics world for a couple years. Again after long hours I decided that I should go back to the world I was licensed for so back to plumbing I went. I have always had a love for cars and fixing things. With a growing family I got a wild hair once again I decided I would try something else and started Buff Dawg. I began going to used car dealerships and working on their used cars, helping to clean up their inventory, to sell. Trying to make their cars look a little less used and helping them not have cars sit around for months. I became good at what I did. Some guys had been in the business for 30+ years and had never seen what I could do. Over time I’ve got to know a lot of awesome people with some awesome cars and collections. Owners and managers of shops too that know exactly who to call when their customers come in with not quite bad enough to repaint but in serious need of a professional cut and buff.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Communication with people who actually understand what my service does. There are lots of people that run a machine but not a lot that actually remove and repair imperfections. Getting customers to understand just what is happening with their paint and knowing I have the capability to fix it and the expertise to not only fix but not do more damage. There is only so much paint on a car and knowing that line where damage can be fixed and completely taking the paint off
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Buff Dawg ?
I work with Dealerships, Body Shops and the general public to restore, maintain automotive paint and glass in hopes that replacement or repainting is not needed. I do paint correction from scratches and rock chips to residues and contaminants like overspray, tree sap, hard water spots my goal is to make it look as close to new as possible. Many customers say it looks better than the day they purchased brand new.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Work on your own stuff first. I dont try a new process on anyone’s stuff that I haven’t tried on my own first. Knowing what each product does and how it makes my job easier. Lots of times 3 short separate processes can be faster and more effective and efficient than doing the same thing on the same area
