Hidden Gems: Meet Tom Magnuson of Caffe Ibis Coffee Roasters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Magnuson.

Hi Tom, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Assure fair compensation and due respect for the people whose labor brings us our exceptional specialty coffees.

Respect and safeguard the environment that provides the extraordinary growing conditions that true specialty coffee requires.

Honor and support our partners in this endeavor and the customers of Caffe Ibis® Coffee.

Our focus is on Triple Certified, Organic, Fair Trade, and Smithsonian Shade Grown “Bird-Friendly” coffee from around the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges we have faced has come recently with supply chain issues. The issue is two-fold in that one farm are struggling with production and crop failures due to climate change issues that are putting a strain on many farms around the world. Beyond this, since COVID, there is ongoing delays with transportation that is affecting ports around the world. These two issues have caused uncertainty and product change on the retail side. That being said, with our strong partnerships in place we have been in a good position to deal with these challenges thus far.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Bird-Friendly coffee. At Caffe Ibis, we are considered one of the largest roasters in the US for bird-friendly certified coffees. We work closely with the Smithsonian organization (SMBC) in Washington DC, that certifies farms bird-friendly. The main idea is that farms are keeping the natural ecosystem intact and growing the coffee beans underneath the native canopy (also known as shade-grown coffee). Rather than traditional full-sun farms that clear-cut an area for coffee production. The certification ensures increased biodiversity for the entire ecosystem with a special attention to the bird community.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking initiatives that we have focused on is a customer-first approach. We want to create strong partnerships with our customers, suppliers, and farmers to ensure we are all being supported.
