Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Morris.
Hi Alisha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a first-time mom, I felt like I was drowning during my postpartum. I couldn’t understand why people would say they loved the newborn stage. I felt so lost, isolated, and anxious. I was so unprepared and uneducated. I didn’t know how to get my baby to stop crying and my health was slipping away.
Why didn’t anyone warn me? I was constantly searching “mommy blogs” trying to find any advice I could and was willing to try anything to help my baby.
Fast forward 7 years. I am pregnant with my third baby and was introduced to a postpartum doula. I was so intrigued and dying to learn more. I ended up taking a postpartum doula class during the 2nd trimester of my pregnancy and was hooked. I dove into any postpartum book and podcast that I could find. I created a postpartum plan for myself and had the most redemptive and empowering postpartum.
I couldn’t believe how different this postpartum was, and felt like I needed to help other mamas feel the same. I started offering postpartum doula services, and have made it my mission to make sure women are educated, supported, and empowered during this sacred transition into motherhood.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting any new business is always going to have its challenges. Every journey has its learning curves, and I have definitely grown a lot and am so much more educated now than I was when I took my first client. Some challenges I faced as I was starting my business, was I was in the thick of pregnancy and soon postpartum.
I had to take time away from my new business so that I could do my own preparation and healing. Being able to use my own planning for my personal postpartum journey, really helped me be able to see what worked and what areas needed more focus. It has been a great learning experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a postpartum doula and believe that education is vital to a successful postpartum.
There is a study done by lansinoh.com, and only 11% of pregnant moms prepare for postpartum. Postpartum is something that obviously is not talked about enough. My goal is to bring awareness about the importance of planning and preparing for your postpartum. I hope that by educating mamas about what to expect and how to prepare for postpartum, we can bring the number of perinatal mood disorders down drastically.
My services: I offer a postpartum planning session. This is a 1 on 1, 2-hour session, where we cover everything during those first few weeks of postpartum. You receive an 80 + page workbook that helps you in planning out your postpartum and figuring out what you would like your healing to look like, and how to ask for the help you really need.
I teach a postpartum class called “simply postpartum.” This is a class for couples and is a 3-series class. We go over nutrition, how to take care of mom and baby, relationships with your partner, dads postpartum, and mood disorders. We really go into depth on these topics so you understand what is normal, and have realistic expectations. We talk about ways to prevent mood disorders and I help set you up for an empowering postpartum recovery.
I also offer meal plans and in-home services. You can see all my services on my website www.simplysouthernbirth.com.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love living in St. George. I love the desert. I love being outdoors and there is so much to do/explore in our area.
I also love the birth village community here in southern Utah. It is such an amazing group of women who are so supportive of one another, and so many opportunities for growth and continuing education.
