Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Osguthorpe.
Hi Angie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in a very small town in southern Missouri and earned a couple of degrees at the University of Missouri before heading to an LDS mission in Portugal. While there I was accepted to BYU for my MBA. I moved west in the early ’90s and have been here ever since. I have three awesome children and one grandson.
I was hired at the Davis Chamber of Commerce when I was a newly single mom needing a job to support my three children. It has been a blessing since day one. I was the Director of Sales and Events until the President/CEO at the time was elected County Commissioner. After an extensive search, I was called up to lead the organization. I have been the President/CEO, the first female in this position, for eight years, making my time at the chamber 13 years total.
I have loved my time here and love our mission of helping businesses and business professionals succeed by providing business advocacy, uniting the business community, and promoting a vibrant community. I could go on all day with the great things accomplished here at the Davis Chamber.
I also love adventure and am a life-long learner, reading about 25-30 books a year. Travel is my favorite thing outside my family, friends, and work. Experiencing new cultures, seeing new sites, and meeting new people makes me feel alive. Just a few of the adventures I have been on include hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, repelling waterfalls in Costa Rica, kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, riding a gondola in Venice, and sky diving in Utah with my children. I am preparing to board a plane the day after Christmas to visit Israel and Jordan with my mother, brother, and sister-in-law. I also love playing pickleball these days. 🙂
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
No worthwhile endeavor is without its challenges. Being a leader is not always easy, especially when you are new. I am grateful for mentors, friends, supportive colleagues, and dedicated employees.
COVID brought many challenges for all of us, especially a not-for-profit organization. I feel we navigated it very well, pivoting when needed and providing value to our members.
Being a single parent is a special challenge that no one really hopes for, but it is a chance to grow and prove yourself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Davis Chamber of Commerce?
The Davis Chamber of Commerce was formed in January 2001 when all existing Chambers in the county combined into one entity. The Davis Chamber logo, in fact, has 15 spikes representing each of the cities in Davis County. As a result of that merger, the Davis Chamber continues to be the voice for business in our county.
By combining networking opportunities for businesses of all sizes with a robust Legislative Affairs presence in Utah, the Chamber is better able to meet its mission of advancing business prosperity in Davis County.
By utilizing the strengths of its general membership, the Chamber’s influence is felt throughout our county and state. Opportunities for involvement include Legislative Affairs, Military Affairs, Women in Business, Business Expo, Business & Economic Summits and Training, Leadership Institute, and more.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Visiting my grandparents on both sides of the family. My mom had nine siblings and grew up on a farm. We loved going there where my grandma would cook a huge meal, I would gather the eggs from the chicken coop, and we played with all of our cousins. Then we would visit my dad’s parents, my Mema and Pepa. My grandpa was the local doctor and we would go to his office and then Mema would take us to the local drive-in for dinner.
Also, vacationing with my family at the Lake of the Ozarks while my dad and his brothers competed in trap shooting contests.
