Inspiring Conversations with Azelia Dickson of Interiors by Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Azelia Dickson.

Azelia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2021 I started Interiors by Design with one goal in mind: Predictable design process, unpredictable designs.
As I started IBD, I collaborated with a ton of different builders. I asked for feedback, and used it to craft a process built around unity. When the Interior Designer and Builder are on the same page, and roles are clearly defined, it creates an incredible Client experience. I’ve worked hard with my team to ensure we understand the Builder process, and can align our own to move in sync with the Builder’s.
The second part to my original goal has to do more with my own passion.
Modern technology gives us all a closer look at what other people are doing. It’s taken a lot of uniqueness out of our world, and replaced it with default conformity. In fashion, in physical appearance, and in Interior Design. I value individuality. My team dedicates themselves to show the world that Interior design is much deeper and more intricate than just “pretty” or “trendy.” Your home, Your space, is a direct reflection of who you truly are. And who you truly are should be cherished.
Interiors by Design is bringing back genuine oneness. We’re diving into that uniqueness, exploring it, and then combining it with functional design principles.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There was a lot of sheer willpower in the beginning. The biggest issue quickly became workload management.
I started IBD when I was freshly 21, in a new town, and with a lot of massive goals. The biggest turning point for me, was when I decided to expand IBD to hold more designers.
Each designer I have brought on is incredibly talented, experienced, and hard working. Their consistent input is so valuable to me. It’s significantly helped improve our process. The goal of this expansion was two part, sort of a “cause and effect.” Improve the designer process improves the client experience.
I learned how to delegate workloads so my designers get to focus on designing, while I focus more on the business side of IBD. This approach provides each designer with a supportive backing to handle things like ordering, client acquisition, the website, all the less exciting, but still important pieces. And in turn, the designer has the headspace to provide our clients with an HGTV level experience.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Interiors by Design is a full-service interior design firm. Our motto is “Predictable design process, Unpredictable designs.” The IBD process centers around our client experience. We work with our Client’s, (and builder if applicable), to create truly outstanding interiors.

I am so proud of the hard work my team puts into each project. We maintain our 5 star reputation because of their expertise and persistence.

We have 5 separate interior designers, each with different focus areas, which I will list below.

2 designers focus on new build custom homes. This entails working with the client and builders preferred style, budget, timeline, and vendors to select Flooring, Tile, Paint, Trim, Lighting fixtures, Plumbing fixtures, Cabinetry, Hardware, Countertops, Window treatments, and Appliances. All selections are input into our 3D walkthrough visualizer and brought to life. These selections are also input into an FFE excel sheet for builders to use on the job site.

1 designer focused on custom home furnishings + staging. This entails finding furniture and accessories that fit the client’s style, timeline, and budget. All furnishings and accessories are selected from our trade-only vendors, giving our client’s access to unique, high quality items. All selections are input into our 3D walkthrough visualizer and brought to life for client approval.

1 designer focused on commercial new builds + furnishings. This entails working with the client and builders preferred style, budget, timeline, and vendors to select Flooring, Tile, Paint, Trim, Lighting fixtures, Plumbing fixtures, Cabinetry, Hardware, Countertops, Window treatments, Furnishings, Accessories, and Appliances. All selections are input into our 3D walkthrough visualizer and brought to life. These selections are also input into an FFE excel sheet for builders to use on the job site.

1 designer focused on remodels. This entails working with the client (and general contractor if needed) to select all desired changes. All selections are input into our 3D walkthrough visualizer and brought to life. These selections are also input into an FFE excel sheet for builders to use on the job site.
