Inspiring Conversations with Char Watson of Watson Dental Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Char Watson.

Hi Char, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been in the healthcare space because I’ve been intentional about whom I wanted to work alongside (the providers and team) and ultimately serve (the patients.)

About 12 years ago, I moved from a pediatric medical office to private dental practice; The transition was initially temporary as I couldn’t find an open position in any medical practice when we moved from Ogden to Logan.

I quickly enjoyed the operations of a dental practice and advanced my position fairly quickly. In 2012, we moved to Brigham City for another job offer my husband had accepted and I luckily found a dental practice down the road that was hiring! I was hired as the Account Manager but quickly moved to the Office Manager within 6 months because of the effectiveness I had with the practice’s needs.

When I had started the practice didn’t have clear processes and systems in place, the culture was upside down, the leadership was struggling to get the team to engage and truly be high performing. My initial intentions of working alongside the Provider and the team while ultimately serving the patients proved to be just what the practice needed. By 2013, the team was strong and the culture really started to turn around positively.

By 2015, I spearheaded a merger with another practice in the community, and overnight the practice nearly doubled. The merger was hard; it was difficult to blend the team due to the vast differences in behavior, communication, and individual preferences of the providers, and even the patients. Our providers ultimately were a great blend, they complimented one another great, it was just getting the alignment from the top down.

Over the course of 12 months, I worked hard to bring that alignment and eventually the team stitched itself together and we were successful! In 2017, the providers decided to open up a second location and hire an Associate.

I quickly stepped into the position as the Director Of Operations; I was overseeing 1 large location and this second location. I handled the principles of strategy and management and learned simply from trial, error, and persistence. The transition from Office Manager to Director Of Ops is a high climb; you move from Manager to an Executive and that takes a very specific set of skills to be successful.

I was unable to find mentorship or training to support my transition and that is what lead me to open Watson Dental Consulting.

In 2019, I went out on my own with the determination to change the industry standards as far as when to start building your executive team and providing the necessary training and coaching to be successful in these roles. I developed the program, The Providers DOO™️ certification program, to give just exactly that.

This program has successfully developed Office Managers, Ops Managers, Project Managers, and even HR Managers to become successful DOOs for solo to emerging dental groups.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No way. If anyone says it’s easy to build a business, I don’t think they are telling the whole story.

I started this business because of a gap that needed to be filled. (1) Providers needed a right hand much sooner in the business cycle than they think, and (2) there needed to be a program to answer the needs while still allowing for internal growth. (multitude of benefits here).

The problem is I’m suggesting that decades-worth of “ways of doing things” should be pivoted and better positioned than it ever has been. That’s a massive barrier to entry.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Watson Dental Consulting?
Watson Dental Consulting is here to change the dental industry’s business landscape for the better. We believe that for practices and owners to truly grow, they need to develop their next-gen leaders. We can do that.

To summarize it in the most simplistic way, I develop next-gen leaders for solo and emerging groups. Throughout the development of their role, I’m also helping them to develop their operational structure and get them through the growth hump.

Our services allow you to develop the next-gen leaders in your organization that will help take you to the business phase you want to be in. We meet you through the hardest phase, the growth and transitional phases and we set you up for success so you can truly sustain where you want to be. Our signature program.

The Providers DOO Certification program is fully online and structured so that he/she can be certified in 90 days.
