Inspiring Conversations with Emily Burney of Auntie Em’s

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Burney.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in the midwest to a traditional family that encouraged white collar jobs in big cities, but I knew that lifestyle would never work for me. Instead, I dreamt of owning a bakery in a small mountain town.

I went to college at the University of Iowa and spent my summers as a raft guide on the Arkansas River in Colorado. It was there that I learned there were plenty of alternative paths in life.

Immediately after college I permanently moved out west and held jobs in the outdoor industry, but never lost sight of my bakery dreams. In 2010 I moved to Park City for a job on ski patrol at the ski resort then known as the Canyons. This left my summers open for different employment, and in 2014 I opened Auntie Em’s at the Park City Farmer’s Market, selling cookies and pies one day a week out of the Cabriolet parking lot.

Over the next 5 years I grew Auntie Em’s into a full-time, year-round business, while still maintaining my job on ski patrol. In 2019 I cut the cord, and committed full time to Auntie Em’s, and even hired a full time employee!

From then on we have consistently provided lovingly baked goods to the Park City community and beyond.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge on this path is that there is no roadmap. There are mentors and people who have blazed their own trail — doing so ahead of me — but ultimately it has been up to me to find the way.

We’ve been impressed with Auntie Em’s, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in homemade baked goods. Our treats are lovingly baked and our goal is to spread joy and happiness through the exchange of our goods.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think quality, consistency, friendliness, and an insatiable desire to never settle and always improve.
