Inspiring Conversations with Jenalee Marshall of Jenalee Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenalee Marshall

Hi Jenalee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET (how refreshing)
I have over two decade’s of experience designing identity, packaging, advertising, corporate, website, interior + architectural remodeling graphics in Europe and the United States. Plus my clients enjoy the confidence in knowing where their money is being invested with my transparent way of billing. Hourly, transparent, design….it’s what I do. And I love it!

For me, offering custom design to entrepreneurs, companies and individuals came organically. I honestly thrive in the corporate realm of graphic designers and art directors and advertising studios. And I am constantly getting offers to partner in businesses I design for! Four so far.

For me, family comes first. From the beginning of choosing this career, the plan was starting my own business. Being a mom to my two kids is priority #1. Owning my own graphic design studio allows me the freedom to work from home and watch my kids grow up at the same time. Although they are now 12 and 14…

I’m fast at what I do.
I’m good at what I do.
I’m in love with what I do: Design.

I’ve been at this for over 20 years. But I’ve been a creative my entire life.

I first designed print material in 1998. Then digital interactive programs in 2000-2003. The first home I designed was for Habitat for Humanity, which won a national award and was built for deserving families in Georgia in 2002. I’ve studied design and have several degrees from BYU-Idaho. My first degree is in custom home / residential design. My second is in graphic design. My minor is in advertising. So besides the years of working as a graphic designer and art director here in Murray Utah, I have professional education to back it up.

My passion lies in design itself. I don’t need to make a quota. I don’t make a dime “selling” monthly services or web hosting. I just charge for my time. And my time is one of the most precious things I have to give…along with my stunning personality.

I look forward to working with all types of organizations, from small start-ups to multi-million dollar corporations. I will bring beautiful and thoughtful design to any project. I’ve had my own small business, www.JenaleeDesign.com full-time since 2008 and I’m not going anywhere.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When my (future) husband found out he would be stationed half-way around the world in Italy, we knew it was time to get married. So I made the leap of faith and stopped by Bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University Idaho and moved to Europe for 4 years. At the time I only had only taken one graphic design class and had just reviewed my Associates in Custom Residential Architecture. I didn’t know if I’d finish schooling or how I’d find a job in a foreign country. It took a year to get hired on with the Air Force in Aviano, Italy. Military spouses were not allowed to work in Italy within the community (the Italians didn’t want competition from Americans), so the only option was on-base. The pay was minimal, but I was the only graphic designer for the Marketing department and I found the job easy and full of freedom. It allowed me to hone my craft with minimal oversight and experiment with style and creativity. I designed newsletters, ads, websites, menus, trade show pop-ups, event posters and more. It gave me complete confidence.

We moved back to the United States and finished our degrees at the same time after the tour in Italy. I got my Bachelor degree in Graphic Design from the Art Department and a minor in Adverting from the Business Department. I was 26. A bit late in the field but prepared to take on clients and work for an International Clothing Company. From there I was set up for success when launching my own design studio: Jenalee Design.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jenalee Design?
I’m a designer of logos.

I’m a designer of websites.

I’m a photographer.

I’m a content writer.

I’m a designer of interior and exterior homes.

I’m a designer of human-scale experiences. Like restaurants and retail spaces.

I’m a videographer.

I basically solve visual problems in print, digital and life-size formats. And I offer this to locals here in Salt Lake City, Utah, the United States and even foreign countries. I do this by offering hourly, transparent, design.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up as the youngest of 5 kids…by 11 years. So I was surrounded by adults. I was a creative, extroverted and thoughtful child. Bullying made me more introverted around those I didn’t know, but with family, I was always expressive and safe. As a teen, I became a competitive athlete in Tennis and Volleyball which enhanced my love for praise and a need to do my very best. I was an “A” student in High School and College, earning awards in both along the way.

People describe me as:

vibrant
kind
driven
beautiful
creative
achiever
opinionated

I love to paint, cheer on my kids in sports, play volleyball/tennis/pickleball, work out, learn about nutrition and food science, cook all foods from scratch and travel the world! Life is good and I am just grateful to add beauty to it.
