Inspiring Conversations with Jessica Sutherland of Above Psychiatry LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Sutherland.

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew that I wanted to work in healthcare. My professional journey in healthcare began when I was just 16 years old, working as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). I fell in love with nursing early on, the human connection, the ability to make a difference in someone’s hardest moments, and the sense of purpose it brought me.

When I entered nursing school, I was sure I wanted to become a labor and delivery nurse, but once I went through my clinical rotations, something unexpected happened, I fell in love with mental health nursing.

After graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), I started working at an inpatient behavioral health hospital and felt like I had found my calling. I loved listening to people’s stories, helping them feel understood, and watching them take steps toward healing. Later, due to moving and scheduling conflicts, I transitioned to a rural, tribal-owned family practice clinic that primarily served patients struggling with substance use disorders. What started as a practical decision turned into one of the biggest blessings of my career.

My mother is full Navajo, but she was raised in foster homes, so many of our Native traditions and cultural practices weren’t passed down to me. Working in a tribal-owned clinic has given me the opportunity to reconnect with my Native culture and helped me see the deep need for accessible, culturally sensitive psychiatric care, especially in rural and underserved communities. It has deepened my understanding of holistic healing: that wellness is not just about treating symptoms, but about nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.

While working as a full-time Registered Nurse (RN), being a wife, a mother, and pregnant with twins, I completed my Doctorate in Nursing (DNP) to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). It wasn’t easy, but it was worth every late night, early morning, and long drives to clinical sites.

As a PMHNP, I’ve learned how powerful it can be to help people heal, whether it’s through medication, words, or simply offering a safe space to breathe. I’m always looking for ways to fill the gaps in care, and that’s what inspired me to create Above Psychiatry LLC. I wanted to make mental health care more personal, flexible, and accessible. Through telehealth, I can meet people where they are, in the comfort of their own homes, on a lunch break, or wherever they feel safe. It’s about meeting people where they are, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

The name Above Psychiatry represents my belief that healing involves more than just the mind — it’s about rising above fear, pain, and stigma and finding strength through hope, connection, and a sense of something greater than ourselves. This work continues to remind me why I chose this path: to listen, to care, and to make healing more accessible. Each person I meet through this practice reinforces my belief that healing is possible. That no matter what we’ve been through, we all have the ability to rise above and create a life filled with peace and purpose.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey hasn’t been smooth, but every challenge helped me grow into a stronger provider. Balancing full-time nursing, family life, and completing my DNP while pregnant with twins taught me perseverance and resilience. Working in a rural, tribal-owned clinic showed me the gaps in culturally sensitive psychiatric care and inspired me to find creative ways to reach underserved communities.
These experiences led me to create Above Psychiatry LLC. Starting my own telehealth practice came with new challenges: learning the business side of healthcare, building a practice from the ground up, and finding ways to make specialized care accessible. Each obstacle strengthened my commitment to meeting people where they are, offering flexible, compassionate, and personalized mental health care that helps them rise above fear, stigma, and struggle.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Above Psychiatry LLC is a telehealth psychiatric practice dedicated to making mental health care personal, compassionate, and accessible. I specialize in treating adults with anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and other mental health conditions, using a combination of medication management, psychoeducation, and individualized support. Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Working in the mental health field for many years has naturally helped me build a network. Contacts often introduce me to other contacts, creating opportunities to learn from a variety of professionals. Online resources like Psychology Today and Facebook groups can also be great ways to connect with peers, mentors, and communities in your field.

I also believe in being your own mentor. With dedication, curiosity, and consistent effort, you can teach yourself almost anything. The key is to stay proactive, keep learning, and be open to both formal and informal mentorship opportunities.
