Inspiring Conversations with Jessica Ulrich of Boutique Builder Bootcamp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Ulrich

Jessica , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2017 I was searching for something to help me combat a mini midlife crisis. I was raising 4 kids, and I was about to have another, and I just didn’t feel like myself. I didn’t feel productive, even though I was working all day, and I just needed to get my creative and competitive side out again!

With immense support from my patient and loving husband, I went on a search to find something that could help me gain my sense of self and; hopefully, bring in some money. The kicker was that I really didn’t want to leave my babies with a sitter and, since I’m not a great follower, I also didn’t want to work for anyone but myself.

After lots of research and prayers, I decided to open a clothing boutique. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was determined and I quickly realized that I was indeed an entrepreneur at heart.

Even though I was making it up as I went along and truly faking it until I made it, sales started rolling in and before long I was bringing in six figures a year with my boutique! I was ecstatic! I was only working while my kids were at school or napping and I truly felt so grateful!

I felt like I had unlocked this amazing secret and I wanted to tell everyone about it! I felt amazing, successful and I knew if I do it, so could other stay-at-home moms!

So after a few years of running my boutique, I decided to start a coaching program to help other wanna-be boutique owners get on the fast track to success. I wanted to help them skip the overwhelm and I felt passionate about helping women feel empowered to live the life they wanted to live, without giving up time with the people they love the most.

I’ve been coaching business owners for about 5 years now and have almost 400 students in my current program. It’s one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done, aside from raising my little humans. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing other women succeed and hit the goals they’ve set for themselves. I like to think that it will have a ripple effect, and hopefully inspire my students’ daughters and sons to go for their dreams.

I believe you’re never too old to reach for a new goal, or learn a new skill. Mom’s are superheroes, and we don’t have to do it all, but there is a way for you to raise your babies and continually develop your talents and skills.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been struggles along the way. I constantly struggle with imposter syndrome.

For example, with my boutique, I felt inadequate because I really wasn’t the most fashionable person on the planet and also because I didn’t feel my body was good enough to be a fashion influencer.

I quickly realized though, that my body was actually a strength and probably helped me propel my business. My ideal customer has always been a stay-at-home mom, and when I allowed myself to be vulnerable and share my insecurities, she was more able to relate with me and envision herself in the clothing I was selling, because her body was also changing with pregnancies.

There were also struggles with learning how to manage people, I made lots of mistakes, and as my business grew and I had to hire more employees, I was really humbled and had to ask for a lot of advice and mentorship from other business owners.

Overall, I’m grateful for the challenges, because they really did help me to become a better person and leader, and I now feel better equipped to guide other boutique owners through the process now.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My best advice, for someone who is just starting out, is to invest in a coach! And yes, I’m a coach so that sounds self-serving, even if it’s not the Boutique Builder program, it’s important to find someone to mentor you. Someone who’s been where you want to be and can help you skip expensive mistakes. I’ve invested thousands in coaching myself and it was worth every penny.

It’s also really important to curate your brand bible and identify your ideal customer before you do anything else. Strong businesses start with a solid foundation. Knowing who you’re aiming to serve is the most critical part of starting and scaling a thriving and profitable business.
