Inspiring Conversations with Jim Quist of Brickyard Boxing & Conditioning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Quist.

Hi Jim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Utah in 2015 to complete my Masters of Sports Medicine while working as the Athletic Trainer for the University of Utah Softball team. During this time I began working out at a boxing gym in Sugarhouse, where I fell in love with the sport and fitness of boxing. I quickly jumped on as part of the front desk crew part time to learn from all of the trainers. I was teaching within 6 months and was able to combine my knowledge of the body with mental and physical challenge at the gym. In 2021 I helped open Brickyard Boxing & Conditioning in Millcreek – to create a place for people to come challenge themselves, release what’s holding them back, and find a community that includes a one stop shop for fitness. In 2025, I became sole owner of Brickyard Boxing and have expanded our offerings to boxing, kickboxing, strength training, adaptive fitness, and senior fitness. We are focusing on connecting with the diverse communities of Salt Lake City and showing them a fun, engaging way to challenge their mental and physical health.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been pretty challenging with the surge of gyms opening. COVID was an incredibly challenging time for businesses, especially in the fitness realm. We have had to look outside or just pitching classes to anyone and really dive in to communities that would benefit most from our type of workout.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Brickyard Boxing & Conditioning?
Brickyard Boxing & Conditioning is not just a boxing gym in Salt Lake City; it’s a community of passionate individuals dedicated to reaching their mental and physical goals. Our unique approach to training and inclusive environment sets us apart. With a variety of offerings, we are your one stop shop for fitness – boxing, kickboxing, strength training, and mobility. If you were to come to the same class time everyday, you would get a completely different workout from one of our 10 coaches, all with 5+ years of experience – most with 10+ years, all together!

We also offer specialty classes for smaller communities in the Salt Lake Valley. We are currently hosting ‘Stronger Together’ – which focuses on those with mental or physical disabilities with the help of the Utah Parent Center (UPC) and the Utah Developmental Disabilities Council (UDDC). In 2025, we were able to host 3, 6 week sessions and have now secured for dates in all of 2026.

Since opening, we have served the Parkinson’s community with Rock Steady Boxing workouts. We opened these classes to all senior fitness as well as those with neurological issues or brain injury.

Most recently, we completed a 4 week program with Stonewall Sports, the LGBTQ+ sports league in Salt Lake. Our collaboration began after having our Saturday LGBTQ+ classes in May. Our goal during this time was to show those in the community that Brickyard Boxing is a safe, welcomign place to workout and start your fitness journey.

We are most proud of the community and all of the positivity we receive from our members. If you read our reviews online, most of them praise the positivity, comfortability, and welcoming of Brickyard Boxing. It is truly a special place – a community of communities.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Fitness and wellness is often trendy so it’s hard to predict but I believe boxing will have its moment like pilates is currently. I see more focus being on injury prevention, longevity, and strength – which are pillars of our gym. I see more and more individuals wanting to connect through movement so I imagine events based around fitness and wellness will continue to grow.
