Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Nix.
Kat, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! My name is Kat and with much love, support, and encouragement from many loved ones, Ritual in Bloom has come into existence this year. Ritual in Bloom is a floral business with offerings that encourage clients to create/reconnect with rituals and ancestral knowledge by developing more intentional relationships with flowers.
Ritual in Bloom was created pretty quickly, and it felt very much like a download from my ancestors. Often folks will say, “it’s so cool you’re living your dream!” True, I’ve always loved flowers, but I view Ritual in Bloom more as the work that was given to me by my ancestors. I’m a Sagittarius, so a fire sign, and I’ve definitely been called a bull in a china shop by many loved ones. However, in trying to find more balance, I started really cultivating a moon practice for myself. That looked like carving out intentional time with the moon cycles to ask me what I want.
What do I want creativity to look like in my life? What do I want my relationships to look like? My work to look like? Through this meditative practice, I started to open myself up to receiving messages from my angels and ancestors. One evening, Ritual in Bloom came to me, and it just felt like not a dream, but my ancestors guiding me to the next chapter in my life. I love art, design, creating, and equally love medicine, flowers, and putting my hands in the dirt.
Both sides of my family have incredible artists, gardeners, and healers and it feels special that I get to be a part of that work as well. One of my favorite offerings on our website is the new moon and full moon bouquet subscriptions. Each bouquet comes with a ritual card that shares some of the bloom’s virtues and a suggested ritual with the moon cycle. Like the moon, it feels full cycle to share with others.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Owning a business is not for the faint of heart! There have been lots of struggles so far but just as many moments of joy and community! I think something I wasn’t expecting to be so hard was the vulnerability it takes.
Previous to being a small business owner and florist, I was an arts administrator. I loved being a hype girl for artists and their work and I genuinely love being a hype girl to my loved ones! Being a hype girl for myself, however, has been hard.
Luckily, I’ve had so many others be hype humans for me, but learning how to be vulnerable has been a challenge in such a public sphere.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Ritual in Bloom is a floral business with offerings that encourage clients to create/reconnect with rituals and ancestral knowledge by developing more intentional relationships with flowers. Flowers are obviously so beautiful, and we know they help us to communicate emotions and mark special occasions but generally, we know very little about the flowers themselves.
Flowers have so much wisdom, medicine, and subtle guidance to share with us, and developing reciprocal relationships with them can be powerful and shift how we relate to our surroundings. Rituals help us to find meaning in the mundane, rituals are intentional. For me, I’ve had some big shifts when working with flowers whether it’s spending time with the blooms, incorporating them in recipes, baths, teas, etc. and I don’t think I’m alone in that.
My hope is that Ritual in Bloom encourages others to spend intentional time with blooms, and from that, there is healing with our relationships to land, ourselves, and each other. We offer seasonal arrangements, a new moon, and full moon bouquet subscription, and lots of custom orders for solar returns, anniversaries, grief, etc. We take on a few weddings and events each year and we love to collaborate with the community!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Honestly, I have a lot of love for Salt Lake City, and that love stems from my love for my community and love for my relationship with the land. There are dominant cultures here that are definitely hard to navigate, but I also get to love and be loved by truly incredible, loving, critical, fun, creative, and talented people.
Salt Lake City is growing FAST, and a lot of consequences are happening as a result of that, however, there are so many folks here who are really fighting to protect each other and the land as these changes happen and I have so much respect for that. Also, creatively, Salt Lake City is really doing something special right now and it feels like a blessing to be in proximity to that. It feels super bottom-up, resourceful, and gritty and I LOVE it and have so much admiration for it.
What I like the least is the attitude to not grow with consideration for people and the planet. The air quality, the drought, the growth without consideration for the future really bums me out, to say the least.
