Inspiring Conversations with Kevin Liu of Bin Showered

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Liu.

Kevin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
How does one decide to start cleaning trash cans for a living? Well, it all started out with two dads, and one common goal in mind- to never be asked by their wives to wash their trash cans by hand ever again, and to help other homeowners also rid of that nasty task on their to-do list.

Meet John and Kevin, co-owners of Bin Showered, where your dreams of having sparkly, clean trash cans come alive, all without lifting a finger. We are both entrepreneurs, and also the fathers of 4 girls between them. We both had a desire to start a new venture and landed on a trash can cleaning service. Our desire was to build a business together that one day, will be handed off to our daughters to help teach that strong work ethic parents hope for their children to acquire as they grow up.

The venture came to mind when John saw a trash can cleaning service truck make its way down the main city drag during a 4th of July parade, cooling off the crowd by spraying water up into the air as it passed by. He thought it was ingenious, and realized how amazing it would be to never be back-splashed in the face again with the questionable sludge and grime that thrives inside your trash cans (if you’ve ever tried washing your cans with a hose, we know you totally get this).

John and Kevin got to talking and decided it was something they had to do! After brainstorming business names, forming a business plan and finding and purchasing a truck, Bin Showered was born.

Bin Showered uses 200-degree water that sprays at 1500 PSI (beat that, garden hose!), completely transforming your dirty, stinky, nasty bins to clean, sanitized and deodorized receptacles! With a few presses of a button, the truck itself lifts the cans up, thoroughly washes the inside with clean water, collects the filth and trash where it can be properly disposed (you’re welcome Mother Nature), and drops the cans back down, where they are taken next-level with an exterior wash, and finished off with a spritz of essential oil sanitizing spray. Everyone deserves a spa day, especially your trash cans!

Bin Showered offers monthly, quarterly, and one-time service plans to fit the needs of your home. We currently operate in the cities of South Salt Lake County and North Utah County.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As for most start-up businesses the road hasn’t been as smooth as predicted. We decided to get into a business that is relatively new in concept and has many unknown factors. From our experience finding a way to procure new business to managing such a pipeline has been quite the challenge. There’s no real road map on how to obtain new clients and then try to figure out which software could handle our needs etc. Also to buy a very expensive piece of machinery and learn how not to break it. I can go on and on about the obstacles that laid before us, but we know that the rougher the journey is the sweeter the victory is.

We’ve been impressed with Bin Showered, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a self-contained garbage can cleaning business. We provide residential and commercial bin cleaning. Also included in our services is power washing options. Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
We would say the biggest piece of advice we’d give is to have a true “WHY” (a motivator) when starting a business. This will allow you to not quit when the tough gets going. If you know that your product fills a true need, then all you need is patience and a way to maintain your lifestyle while you’re building your new company. Also last and just as important, make sure you learn how to delegate. Put the right people in the right roles and trust that they can do that job.
