Inspiring Conversations with Markie Mitchell of The Movement Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Markie Mitchell.

Hi Markie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Markie Mitchell, and I am the owner of The Movement Center. I have coached tumbling, cheer, dance, and acrobatics for the last 15 years and worked for over 10 different studios in the Salt Lake Valley. In my experience, I found what was lacking in our community was a program based on positivity, inclusivity, and top-quality training for recreational students. As many of you may have noticed, when attending a gym with a large competitive presence there is a lot of focus on the competition teams. Those teams tend to be given the best training the gym has to offer. Our goal is to provide that same top-quality training for our recreational students in a positive, non-competitive environment. The Movement Center is more than a tumbling gym or dance studio, we are a community where people ages 2-65 can come together and feel welcome to try new things and move their bodies. We believe that Movement is for everyone, and we offer many different styles of classes to fit our community’s needs. We offer dance, acrobatics, cheer, tumbling, special needs classes, adult dance, adult tumbling, adult flexibility classes, and more. We would love you to come try out a free class and join our community of movers!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We opened September of 2019 and at first, it was hard to build up our client base and make a name for ourselves. By January we were doing well and the karate studio that was next door to us moved out of their spot. It was right next door! How could we pass up this opportunity to expand our business? So, we went ahead and rented out the additional space next door and it took us quite an investment and a lot of time to get it ready to open. March 1st, 2020, we opened the new location, and we were so excited to expand. Then COVID came along right around March 15th. We were devastated to have to close our doors. We had just doubled our rent with hopes of building our program and now we had to shut down completely!? We ended up offering some at-home training videos for our clients at $5/week which would have covered about half of our bills. Then something amazing happened. Our community started to reach out to us saying “we will pay our normal tuition; we love you guys and want to support you!” we had families donating extra money to help us pay our bills and keep us afloat during this time. We had students writing us letters with their own money to help us during this time. What an amazing thing to experience. Our community came together to save our business and we were just stunned by how loving and generous the people within our studio are. This is when we really realized that we have built something special at TMC. We returned to the studio in July and of course, things were not normal, but we were just happy to be with our students again. We are now back to running classes and have been able to open yet another studio next door! We are so happy to be surrounded by the amazing people in our community and we are glad to be able to help bring people together during this time.

We’ve been impressed with The Movement Center LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
