Merrill, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story began within the walls of the film program at Utah Valley University. That is where Merrill Nielson, and Trevor McIntosh, the owners of Salt Valley Post, went to school together. They became good friends as they developed a deep respect and fascination for visual storytelling. They both spent several years working as freelance filmmakers before a project brought them back together in 2018. The moral of this story is to be open to ideas with people you share good energy with. Merrill and Trevor supported each other from afar until a solid opportunity presented itself to explore some untapped Utah opportunities for Virtual Reality Filmmaking. 6 years later, here we are in 2024, running a full fledged VR production company, VR Wizards; along side a full fledged video post production company; Salt Valley Post. It all started with good rapport at a quality institution for filmmaking.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Something to know about the film industry in Utah and frankly all over the world; Its volatile. There are many ups and downs, many bridges to burn, and a lot of turnover, but Salt Valley Post has persisted in spite of it all. Covid, along with several strikes over the last couple years made things hard for filmmakers everywhere. We managed to get through all the problems by genuinely wanting what is best for each other, along with everyone we work for and with. It’s that simple. We care about what we do and the people that we do it for. Our clients can rely on that, so we continue to work.
