Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Krahenbuhl
Rachel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story started during undergrad when I took a Pilates class for fun to fill some credits. I quickly fell in love with the method and it’s ability to create a deeper mind body connection in myself. After graduating with a psychology degree I embarked on a Pilates teacher training. After two years of study, practice, and apprenticing, I became an advanced instructor on all the Pilates equipment. Through the next several years I taught, dabbled in other modalities and explored the world of fitness and health through mindful movement. I loved the opportunity it gave me to explore my own body, improve my relationship with myself, and make a positive influence in others mind body connection.
Through my time working with clients I noticed that as I worked with their bodies they would start to open up more and more. A deep sense of connection and trust ensued, and they would share things with me that felt important and personal about their individual health journeys. I wanted to develop the skills to hold space for all things health and wellness, so embarked on another degree in health education and wellness coaching. My masters in health and kinesiology gave me a deeper understanding of human anatomy and physiology, as well as the many layers of human health and behavior change that support holistic well-being.
I now combine my experience of working with the physical body as well as coaching someone through behavior change. My work includes therapeutic movement to influence someones physical well-being and relationship with self, and coaching to help improve their spiritual, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being. I am now able to help clients both in the hour we are together as well as the hours outside of session. I love harnessing the energy that comes from working on physical self improvement to also positively influence other areas of someones life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Certainly not smooth! Being self employed has so many waves of ups and down. I remember making the leap from my secure corporate job to teaching Pilates full time. I wasn’t sure how it would work, but I knew it was my path to feeling more fulfilled and living in line with my purpose. It took several years to build the clientele and sustain myself but everything had a way of working out as I went along. I learned a lot about faith and trusting that I have the ability to figure things out, and that the universe has my back and wants me to succeed.
Graduate school was another hurdle. Because it had been nine years since I was in undergrad, I had to re-do a lot of the pre-requisites. Turns out taking college algebra after not doing math for over a decade is really hard! I also had to apply for my graduate program twice because I didn’t have any academic letters of recommendations. But after two tries and many laborious hours doing pre-requisites, I made it in and am so glad I persevered. I learned so much and am so grateful for the education and experiential opportunities I had working and learning up at the University of Utah.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
