Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Hamill
Hi Rachelle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
While working on my Bachelor’s degree in an entirely different field, I was told by friends and trusted teachers that I should consider becoming a therapist. This came as a surprise to me, as I’d never considered working in the therapy field. I graduated with my Bachelors degree and while working, realized that although I was in an important line of work, I felt unfulfilled and lacked the level of passion that I desired to have in my professional life.
A couple of years later, I decided that I would like to explore the therapy field, prior to making any career changes. I began searching for jobs that would allow me to work in the therapy field, and landed as a Residential Staff Member at a local treatment center for teens. The experience that I gained during those couple of years (excitedly) propelled me into my career change. I attended graduate school at Brigham Young University 2008-2010, and have not looked back.
Over the next several years I gained a tremendous amount of experience working in a variety of therapeutic settings including residential facilities for teens, outpatient therapy practices, and most recently building my own practice over the last couple of years.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was extremely difficult to find gainful employment, once I graduated. My previous internship site expressed that they wanted to hire me, however they were on a hiring freeze and could not even replace therapists if anyone left the company. In the Fall, as I was going through a divorce, I relocated to California to be near family. After 7 months in CA without finding sustainable employment, I applied to various jobs back in Utah and got hired at a therapeutic residential facility for teen boys. That job put me on the pathway to building the specialties I currently have, inside a career I was coming to love.
Although I had been hired for a full time position, wages were very low, and I had to work overtime hours in order to afford childcare for my daughter. I was a full-time single mother with no child support or financial assistance, and working a highly intensive job that required all the energy I could muster. I was exhausted, yet loved the work I was doing. Things were very difficult financially and energentically back then.
My various positions have allowed me to work with people from across the World, in various cultures and professions, values and priorities, and with a variety of treatment team members, all assisting clients to increase their mental and emotional health. I have likely learned much more than I have taught. Not every treatment team member has been pleased with the therapeutic process. I have worked with a handful of disgruntled people who have worked to impede the therapy process instead of support it. All of these challenges have helped build me both personally and professional to where I am today.
