Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Crump.
Hi Trevor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My whole life I always knew that I wanted to be in marketing.
When I was 14 years old, one of my best friends’ dad sold his marketing agency for millions of dollars and he retired when he was the age 34. So naturally, as a young kid, I knew that that’s what I needed to do in order to be rich, and own a marketing agency. It just so happened to be as I got older I love the concepts and ideas of marketing.
I ended up going to school to get my degree in marketing at the University of Utah and during that time as I was getting my degree in the last 18 months before I graduated high school I applied to dozens of different marketing jobs and made it through to the final round of 18 different marketing opportunities.
All 18 marketing positions turn me down because I didn’t have enough marketing experience. Not knowing what to do I decided to get my master’s degree from Westminister College in marketing. I ended up finally getting a company to take a chance on me from a marketing perspective and I’ve been heads down in marketing for the last 9 to 10 years.
As I got older, I started to realize the burden of owning my own business and it turned me off from wanting to be an entrepreneur and a business owner, But in 2017, I worked for a company that got raided by the FBI with a suspect of bad dealings. I watch that company go from being on the top of the world to having a layoff over 50% of the workforce.
For some reason, that lit a fire in me to not wanna work for somebody else again and not wanna put my family’s hands in someone else’s potential bad decisions. So I and a good friend of mine decided to build an e-commerce brand in the golf space that took off. Doing six figures in year one and now is consecutively doing seven figures a year.
From there, I decided to build an e-commerce marketing agency with another friend of mine called the lab. We wanted to build an agency where we could be more a part of the Brands team rather than just someone who ran their ads.
We talk about everything they’re doing with a marketing perspective we talked about their brand, we talk about their profitability, we want to make sure that we’re working in tandem with each other and because of that, each party is able to hold each other to high level of accountability.
When we’re working we’re getting stuff done and seeing results. Brands don’t tend to fire us we tend to fire ourselves if we don’t feel like we can help them.
During this process, I wanted to help more people like myself who struggle to get into Marketing and to get an opportunity to learn about marketing and entrepreneurship. So I started building a personal brand teaching experience people how to become better self-learned marketers on my social profile @thetrevorcrump (gaining just over 30K followers).
Fast-forward it today and we have a seven-figure marketing agency (only 18 months in business). We are building another e-commerce brand, launching a data analysis app that is going to give greater insights into e-commerce businesses and their customer Lifecycle.
We’re also building a community and education platform where people can learn more about digital marketing and running a business.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me was making the jump from employee to entrepreneur. It is amazing how real imposter syndrome really is.
I’ve been in digital marketing for 10 years, and I know it well. I have been a business owner and a CMO. But moving away 100% on my own was scary. But the moment I did it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.
Its also been rather easy to win. When you’re good at something, have a good partner, and a good team it takes a lot of the burden off of “being on your own”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Labwork Media?
I already said a lot of this in my first question.
But The Lab is a performance marketing agency for e-commerce brands. What is different from us is that we are building something much bigger. We want to be a bigger part of teams. We know everything about e-commerce, so running ads is just the surface of what we can do.
When you work with us we dive deep into your data. We understand how every part of their business connects. How emails impact ads, how product dev impacts organic growth, how if your brand positioning is off it doesn’t matter how good your marketing is you won’t succeed.
We help brands grow or get back on track through data, analysis, our gut, and being around the block a time or two. Accountability on both ends is everything. Most agencies shy away from that.
What makes you happy?
I love teaching and creating content. Part of what we do as consultants are to teach our clients how to run better businesses. I love taking those same principles and simplifying them for young aspiring marketers and entrepreneurs.
I am not a big fan of college education for marketers and entrepreneurs. I just don’t think that the curriculum can keep up. Plus, everything out is online for free anyway.
My goal is to build a community and platform where people can come and learn to scale their businesses or jump into a marketing position without a whole ton of experience.
