Inspiring Conversations with Ty Brown of Ty The Dog Guy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Brown.

Hi Ty, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started this dog training business from my home in Orem in 2006 as a 25-years-old with no business experience. We were on such a shoestring budget, I didn’t even have a cell phone and the only way I could get to my clients’ homes was by driving a beaten up, old Ford Ranger that didn’t have a third gear, air conditioning, heating, or just about anything else. I had traded a friend some dog training for the truck and that’s how we started.

I had $10 a month invested in website hosting and that was it. I was able to get some early lucky breaks by getting featured by several news outlets and getting some key clients that helped us survive that first year. Once we made it a year and did over $100,000 in business that year we knew we had something special.

It’s fifteen years later now. We’ve got 12 trainers now in Utah in addition to three office staff and locations of the company in California, Nashville, Charleston, Savannah, Austin, and soon to be Florida. Today, we train over 1000 dogs per year and our main goal every day is how to show up better and better for our clients and their dogs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been smooth? Not at all. Most of the challenges have been self-imposed in learning how to recover from my own mistakes.

I’m not a natural leader or manager. Learning how to empower a team isn’t in my DNA. That’s definitely stalled the growth of the business as I’ve been learning how to integrate people of all backgrounds into a singular culture that’s dedicated to improving dogs’ and owners’ lives.

I’ve made so many mistakes there with not trusting when I should, trusting when I shouldn’t, withholding the reigns too tight, and giving too much freedom. Growing a team is our ability to impact more people and their dogs so it’s critical. And it’s a REALLY hard task to undertake.

The better I get at it, the better we get at it as a team, the more we succeed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
