Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Chambers.
Hi Abigail, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About a year ago, I was coming to the end of my time in the Army. I was facing a time in my life that always felt exciting. It couldn’t come fast enough. I had always wanted something that was entirely mine. I always thought I would start a small business, but never had any idea as to what it would be.
Unfortunately, like a lot of people. I was facing a lot of mental health issues and I was feeling stuck in a lot of places in my life. Regardless of the fact that I felt I had everything I wanted as far as a beautiful and healthy relationship. The dogs, the house, the cars, The things were just things and I really needed something to spark passion in me again to pull myself out of my depression.
I was lounging on my couch one day, swiping through TikTok. A candle making video popped up. My immediate feeling was comfort and soothing. Watching that video immediately gave me a bit of joy. I jumped online and bought a simple candle making kit. When it arrived, I was so stoked to make candles and feel that feeling I had when I watched that video. And I did.
I made my first batches of candles and from there I was sold. I didn’t want to stop. Before I knew it, I was spending all of my time researching candles and figuring out how to make them completely safe. I had a tremendous amount of support from family and friends who wanted to purchase candles from me. It was so exciting. So from there, I decided I would register Burning Rebellion Wax Company as and LLC.
I attended my first market at the Monarch in Ogden. I was shocked my candles were such a hit. I immediately started getting offers for other opportunities selling my candles. I still didn’t fully believe people love what I love doing as a HOBBY. After my first few markets and the flood of support, I knew this was for me. I have been making candles for almost a year now and I still fall in love with the process each time I make them. I couldn’t be more grateful for this passion and all of the support I have received from the local community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. As a new business owner, I feel like this is most likely often the case. Coming in to this, I knew absolutely nothing about what it takes to run a small business. I have had to set aside plenty of time to do my own research in regards to being the EVERYTHING behind my business.
As far as making candles goes. It is a complete science. I have spent months learning to perfect my craft. And there will always be something to learn. I always joke about how badly my candles were when I first started making them and people still supported me. But hey, that’s growth. I can definitely say I have had to learn the hard way in some cases. I am getting much better at improving my research beforehand so that I am not wasting resources.
Another struggle I have faced are realizing that I have to be somewhat decent at running my social media accounts. Making content, posting content, and connecting with people through social media in regards to my business. I am not a phone person and I feel mostly introverted. So this is something that I am still working on and hoping to get better at once I am no longer working a full time job as well. Balance is hard when you want to do it all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I pride myself in being a female, lgbt+, and veteran-owned business. I make all natural and non-toxic, small batch candles, wax melts, and room sprays. Each product is carefully made with you and the environment in mind. I am known for my unique and complex scents that are delicate and powerful at the same time. Each candle is made with a crackling wooden wick, making any space feel cozy. Our products have the ability to make any space feel welcoming, without facing harsh toxins usually found in most other candles. My goal is to make that one special candle for everyone that keeps them coming back, whether it’s seasonal or a year-long favorite.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think anyone who starts a small business is taking a risk. There is always the chance it could go either way as far as success goes. I view myself as a risk taker because I chose to put my craft out to an audience of people and potentially be ridiculed for what I love to do. I am lucky to receive mostly praise, but I have grown to know that it is okay if not everyone loves what you do. As long as I love what I do, then I am still working in the right direction. I view risks as a chance to grow and learn more about yourself as an individual. You really learn what you’re capable of in situations where you just put yourself out there.
