Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Christine.
Alexa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey as a full-time single mom began in late 2021. That was pretty much my “rock bottom”. I was living with my mom, trying to get back on my feet emotionally, mentally, and financially. During that difficult time, I took a solo trip to the island of Kaua’i, where I had previously lived before. I had a strong feeling I was meant to move back and a good friend of mine, miraculously was able to help me find a little studio for me and my girls to rent. I went back to Utah, sold most of my things, and packed up the rest into 6 boxes.
Ten days later, we flew across the ocean to our island home. I had not yet had a job or anything lined up. This was a huge leap of faith especially with the pressure to provide for my little ones who were 4 and 6 at the time. However, I am extremely determined and a hard worker so I wasn’t too worried. I knew I’d figure it out. The islands warmth and glow instantly began to heal our broken pieces and quite literally helped me back on my feet in every way. For work, I started on the rafts. A small, quick 24 ft zodiac. I was a crew member and the captain and myself would take tourists from all over the world across the most beautiful coastline, the Nā Pali coast. I learned and taught the beautiful history of the people who used to call that sacred coastline home. I had a wonderful nanny on the island at the time who cared for my girls while I worked. She informed me that she would be moving off island. So I had to figure something else out. That’s when I took a courageous leap to start my own photography business.
My love for photography started in my home when I developed a passion for taking pictures of my two daughters. That led to taking photos for close family and friends but it was always something I did for fun. So in October 2022, I started up an Instagram account @lexachristinephotography and started to get clients on Kaua’i. This was a perfect job for me and I feel so grateful because as a full-time single mom, I was able to bring my girls with me on every shoot I did. The girls just played in the sand or wherever we were in nature. I did photography there for about a year before expanding to St George, Utah.
I have loved the variety of scenery I have been able to work with; from the beautiful island tropics to the vast and colorful desert. I feel so grateful to be able to capture my clients in the present state and moment that they are currently in. Life is constantly changing for all of us and because of that, I find still moments to be very valuable. To have the opportunity to be able to look back and remember and feel the feelings you had at a certain point in your life. Photography is powerful and I feel honored to be able to capture so many beautiful moments. I currently take clients in both places and am looking forward to meeting more amazing families, couples, and individuals on Kaua’i and in Utah.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I kind of mentioned some of those in the last question but photography has its busy and slow months depending on where you are. It was sort of difficult to expand from Hawai’i to Hawai’i and Utah because everywhere you go, the way you advertise and the prices are different.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in outdoor family, couple, or portrait photography. Just recently have I branched out to studio and indoor photography but my favorite has always been outdoor photography. I just love being outside in my free time and have a deep appreciation of nature so that’s where I prefer to create. I will soon be getting into wedding photography and am very excited.
I would say what sets me apart from others is my editing style and how I shoot. Every photographer is an artist and unique to their style and vibe. I also get along very easily with everyone so all of my clients have been able to loosen up and be comfortable in front of the camera. I like to make small talk and get to know my clients a little before we start shooting and throughout the shoot so they feel comfortable and themselves.
And for those who aren’t sure what to do in front of the camera, I always help them to be themselves and guide them with ideas of things that they would naturally do if they weren’t getting their photos taken. My absolute favorite feeling as a photographer is when my clients are comfortable and I can capture them being them in those candid moments.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Yes! I love “The Four Agreements”, and “The Power Of Now” and my favorite author is Yung Pueblo.
Lots of self-healing, empowering, encouraging and uplifting things. In all of these books, there are really powerful tools that just help you to be you, live authentically, live presently and purposefully, heal and grow, and just help you to be your best self.
I love these books because they help me to understand others better which helps me to relate and connect with my clients which makes the photoshoots go better.
