Life & Work with Annie Pugmire of Salt Lake City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annie Pugmire

Hi Annie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was 12 years old, I attended my cousin’s wedding. My grandma made the cake and insisted that I place the sugar flowers with her. That sparked enough interest in me to want to make cakes with my mom – who had always made us elaborate birthday cakes every year. 90s Barbie cakes and more!

My mom and I started making cakes for family and friend events while I was in high school and college. This was great practice and a side hustle.

In 2011, I decided I could probably turn this into a career. I bought a few online courses to sharpen my skills and I perfected my recipes. Fourteen years later, I’m still at it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say the hard part is getting your name out there and building a brand. I was so young when I started. I didn’t understand pricing and the business side of things. One of the biggest struggles I had was imposter syndrome. Not charging what I was worth because of my lack of confidence in myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make wedding, anniversary, birthday, cakes and cupcakes. My true passion and my speciality would definitely be wedding cakes.

Every cake I make, I make it as if it were my own. It’s not just another cake to me. I enjoy minimalist and simple. Classic and clean. I love working with other wedding specialists to make an entire event come to life. I get so proud seeing the whole vision come together.

What matters most to you?
Communication. I try to respond to all inquiries the same day. I want my potential clients to know that I am reliable and that their event is important to me. I want them to have a good experience from start to finish if they choose me to be part of their event.
