Life & Work with Becca Lee Gardner of Kaysville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Lee Gardner

Hi Becca Lee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I believe in the power of stories. I lost my dad when I was 12 and books like Ender’s Game, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars: Heir to the Empire pulled me from my grief. They gave light and hope and adventure to my world that had darkened in one tragic day. There’s a light to stories—a flame that passes from author to reader. It can enlighten minds and illuminate new worlds. It can guide others like a beacon through dark days.

I have had those dark days. And now I have a light I want to share with others.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve done a lot of taxing jobs in my life–everything from being a ranch hand, to grooming dogs, to being a legal assistant, to working security–and none of them have challenged me like writing a novel has. Writing a novel is an act of faith. It’s a practice of stubborn resilience. It’s a bit of magic that you must protect from your own fears and rampant self-doubt.

And, if you manage to nuture a book into existence, it’s just the beginning.

After that comes finding people who would love to read it. And doing that again and again, while also writing the next book.

It’s a beautiful and harrowing process. And, quite frankly, I’m addicted to it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an 8-time Honorable Mention Winner from the Writers of the Future contest. Worldbreaker: An Eldros Legacy Novel won the Utah Author’s League 2024 Recommended Read Award. I write novels, comic books, screenplays, and short stories. My most recent series, Min the Mighty, began as a bedtime story I told her kids and has become a fan favorite.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Have a beginner’s mind and you can find a mentor in every step of your journey. Be confident and happy in your voice and the stories you have to tell, while being eager to learn more and to learn often. I’ve been privileged to have found phenomenal mentors in my writing journey (particularly in Doug Wagner and Todd Fahnestock). But I continue to be inspired and learn from every group of creatives I find myself in!
