Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Willard.
Hi Becky, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
It all began for me as an 11-year-old who fell in love with the process of creating songs and harmonies. Eventually, I found myself in college pursuing music education which led me to teach private voice lessons in my home studio. Over time, I began helping my students with their songs, making them better, and working up demos to send to a producer. As my confidence began to rise, I had a few students who trusted me with actually producing and recording their songs for release. Years down the road, I realized my true passion was in the creative process. Now, I get to help artists and songwriters take what is in their heads and turn it into real music they can share with the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been a winding road. It may have looked rocky at certain times but looking back, those were the times I was being stretched to improve a certain area. Thankfully, I never gave up during those times because they helped me grow and progress as a producer and freelancer.
Thanks so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music producer and audio engineer. Most people don’t really know what that means because the words get thrown around a lot in different scenarios. When you go to one “producer”, they may approach things completely differently than I do. Some producers “make beats”. Some are more like directors where they have other musicians playing the music and they are “shaping” the arrangements and sound with their direction. I am a hands-on, creative producer who likes to create! I work with artists who write songs and I consider myself their “creative partner”.
I’ve also become very passionate about helping artists navigate the tricky waters of the music industry. It’s not only tricky, it’s confusing, scary, full of predators and predatory practices. Most artists just want to make music for a living and yet that can feel nearly impossible. I love helping artists know and understand how to build a music career by shifting their mindset from “I just want to make music” to becoming an entrepreneur. It’s hard to be an entrepreneur. It takes work, commitment and consistency as well as a sort of relentless tenacity but it is absolutely possible. I do it myself and I know a lot of people like you and me who make a living doing what they love.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’ve really adapted the mindset of providing as much value to people as I can offer. Many, many artists I work with tell me of their experiences with other music producers and they are basically at odds with the producers. It’s hard to get them to make changes, it’s hard to even get them to finish projects! The artists often get treated with disrespect. I believe it because I had similar experiences in the past. It’s one of the reasons I really wanted to learn how to produce music.
It was because I was tired of trying to arm wrestle with someone to get what I wanted! If you are working with a producer who wants you (the artist) to be 100% proud and happy with the final production, they will always be loyal to you. I know I’m not the most skilled and I’m definitely not the cheapest. But many artists come back to work with me over and over again because they know I am dedicated to making their music exactly as they want it.
