Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Carter.
Hi Brynn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have loved to draw ever since I was a little kid, and I took some art classes in high school and college, but I didn’t really get serious about having an art career until 2016.
I started out the way a lot of artists start out a few family members and friends reached out about having me hand-letter their favorite quote or paint a portrait of their dog.
I still love doing pet portraits, but as my skills have grown I have been able to expand into other areas of art that I enjoy, especially designing stickers.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for animals and cartoons, and my art reflects that. I also love jewelry, especially earrings, and have been making jewelry for fun for a long time. I currently create resin earrings as a part of my collection of products but would love to expand into more accessories. In the future, I hope to take on some illustration projects and design more products!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road, and it has especially been a long journey. The biggest struggle I have had to fight with is my own self-doubts, worries about financial stability, and figuring out how to handle working, being a single mom, and starting a business when I didn’t really know how. I struggle with ADHD and balancing all of the little tasks was a monumental effort that I couldn’t get a grip on for a long time.
I came to a point a year and a half ago where I decided that I wanted to be able to look back at my life someday and see that I gave my dreams a fighting chance, but at the same time, I gave myself permission to give up and do something else if being an artist wasn’t making me happy anymore. That permission to “give up” wasn’t really about giving up, but rather giving myself ownership over my career and my life, and it’s helped me realize how much I really do love being an artist. I also changed my mindset to one of just looking at the next thing instead of getting overwhelmed by all the things. I still repeat to myself almost daily that every little step counts and I have my whole life to get there.
I realized that working hard, having setbacks, and suffering for something you love is all just a part of reaching for what you want in life, and experiencing those things doesn’t mean you are doing a bad job. These mindset shifts made all the difference in gaining momentum for my business and since then It has grown so much. And, to give credit where it’s due, the right ADHD meds definitely help me balance all of the tasks.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say I am most known for my sticker designs. I love creating all of the little illustrations and drawings for them! Something that sets me apart is that I draw all of my sticker designs by hand, including most of the lettering! My pet portraits are pretty popular too, and I love capturing the sweet personalities of all of the animals I draw. In general, I would say I have developed a pretty distinct style for my art, and I am proud of that.
I love the cute, animated feel my drawings and paintings have. I want my art to be relatable, uplifting, and funny, and I want other people to feel seen when they look at my art. My favorite thing about being an artist, and the reason that I have always loved art, is being able to bring my imagination to life. It enriches the way I experience the world.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I paint a lot of dogs, I have created stickers geared towards dog lovers, and I think dogs are adorable. But I never want to own a dog. I appreciate them and I am glad they bring happiness to so many people. I grew up with dogs that I loved. I also find them overwhelming and I would have a hard time living with one. However, I do have the sweetest cat ever, and he was the model for one sticker designs!
