Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Duncan.
Hi Chloe, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a very artistic family, so have grown up around the art business. Started watercolours about ten years ago and thankfully, my work was popular from the start. My mother is also a professional watercolourist and convinced me to try my art as I had always been pretty good. I was hesitant as first but so glad I did. I started out with just black pen and ink and slowly incorporated loose watercolour washes into my work. I have always gravitated towards nature and wild animals, especially trees in winter, wild scraggly grasses and weeds. To me, that is beautiful and real nature. I shy away from the typical roses in a vase image. I want to character, ambiance and emotion. Having lived in Idaho for a few years and I fell in love with the scenery and rustic imagery, which is still heavily reflected in my work. I was born and raised in Scotland so dark stormy colours typical to Scotland are a strong influence in my work.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Generally speaking, being an artist is not the easiest career path! Thankfully because of my mum’s help I was able to hit the ground running and was already familiar with art galleries, art shows and giclee printing…not to mention watercolours! I was lucky to sell the first originals I created pretty quickly and it kept flowing. Having said that, it is constant work and a lot goes on behind the scenes. You have to be very motivated and dedicated but it is so so worth it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in nature and wild animal imagery. My work has been described as whimsical, ethereal and peaceful. I do have a few images that are absolute favourites and many many homes have giclee prints of them. Sometimes I reflect on how many homes have a piece or many pieces of my work and I am truly appreciative and thankful.
There are so many incredibly talented watercolourists out there but I like to think my work has a slight edge. I aim to make each piece exciting and fresh
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Deciding to become a full-time artist was a bit of a risk in itself but there was no other option for me and it is what I wanted. The generic office jobs I did before seem like a previous life and nightmare! I could never go back. I feel so lucky to travel and meet with all the people I do whilst selling my work. Other than that, I can’t say I have taken many risks!
