Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Gillock.
Hi Connie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
During my junior year of high school, my art teachers awarded me a scholarship to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It was a summer program of figure drawing.
From that point on, I continued to take courses at SAIC. and I earned my BFA. I mostly focused on photography. I also studied printmaking, film, and drawing.
Eventually, I decided that I needed to learn how to paint properly and I returned to SAIC. I devoted my creative energy to painting courses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of my initial struggles were related to my budget. I was not able to support myself and focus on an art career. I estimate that I held over 20 jobs that were not art related.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My favorite aspect of what I do is curating art exhibitions. I enjoy working with other artists and supporting their ideas. Personally, I paint portraits – mostly family members.
My proudest moment will be the next art exhibition that I am involved in. During the month of June 2023, I will curate an art exhibition that includes artists that I love and respect.
In addition to this exhibition, Nebraska Wesleyan University has invited me to teach beginning painting students. I am also writing a lot these days – my essay, Art and Economics is important to me because I will highlight the significance of the economic struggles that artists face.
