Today we’d like to introduce you to David Habben.
Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was lucky to be connected with the creative world early on, both at home and as a career. I was always encouraged in my artistic pursuits by a mother who has a wonderfully creative minds and filled our home with books. That showed me the world of illustration and an incredible variety of artistic styles. It also instilled in me a love for drawing that has stayed with me through a career that’s taken me to a variety of in-house and freelance opportunities. Eventually, I found myself with the opportunity to return to school and pursue a career in education. Now, as an illustration professor at Brigham Young University, I’m able to not only continue my artistic pursuits, but share my experience with the rising generation of creatives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road always looks a bit smoother in the rear view mirror and I try to focus on the present, doing the best I can with the challenges in front of me. However, one of the greatest challenges I remember working through was experiencing a job and a move that I thought would open new doors and new opportunities. Unfortunately, it seemed to do the opposite. The job wasn’t what I thought it was. The new town wasn’t either. As rough as that experience was, it taught me to be focused more on what I really wanted in my career, rather that what other people wanted for (or from) me.
I also want to note, that any of my challenges are made easier by the companionship of my wife. I couldn’t have made it through the ups and downs of this career without the faith, support, and hard work that she has offered as we work side by side to create the life and family we want. During our early years of marriage, we navigated career changes, moving, limited budgets, and the growth of our family. Our partnership has made it possible.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My illustration and artwork spans across the creative industry and includes publishing, marketing, and product illustration, as well as, gallery exhibits and self-authored products. I actively create work for clients and also my own original work, created using a marriage of analog and digital methods. My clients know me for bold, expressive, and detailed artwork and the ability to bring fresh ideas to the development of new projects. I’m proud to say that at this point in my career, I’m developing more and more work that speaks to my own aesthetic and style and is gaining recognition. I’m learning to let my voice be more fully heard and am incredibly grateful to those to have supported and strengthened it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
All luck is good. What we call “bad” luck is just the experience of waiting to see our luck in the right perspective. So, to your question, I consider myself very lucky.
