Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Carter.
Hi Dylan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
What started as an “easy A” in high school turned into an intricate and deep passion that allows me to meet new creatives and work with some of my favorite people. I was never really good at art or drawing but I still wanted to find that creative outlet that was out there somewhere for me. I found photography and videography through a high school media competition and fell in love with the process of creating something from merely an idea. This developed into me using my mother’s camera for years and then investing in my own and shooting photos for friends and family to start. I started experimenting with product photography, automotive, engagements, portraits, and nature. This led to an even larger drive to grow and expand my interests and learn to work with others. I went on a mission to Washington D.C. and after returning, launched my website and social media accounts and now love working in the portrait and wedding areas specifically. I’ve had experience doing real estate, food, and pet photography so in any and all forms of photography, I’d likely be very interested!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For me, it has been a fairly smooth road honestly. The hardest part of my journey has been finding my own unique style and not trying to just replicate what other creators have already done. Being in the Utah county area, we are heavily saturated with other photographers, so finding some sort of editing style or service that will stick out was difficult. But after enough practice and working with some pretty amazing clients, I was able to step into my shoes and find a comfortable identity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I want to see myself doing in the future is having solid experience in all types of photography. I want to be a one-stop-shop when it comes to media. Need an automotive shoot? I got you. Want to have some dreamy bridals taken? Let’s do it! For right now I want to focus on my wedding content and continue creating images that couples will have forever and love every second of it. I love working with new people and finding new clients that want to make their vision come to life.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I see risk taking as a very needed step in the business journey. If an entrepreneur is nervous to take risks, the payoff will never happen. I haven’t made the jump to full-time photography (though I’d very much like to), I do see little steps here and there as “risks”. Putting yourself out there for the world’s critique can be scary enough. Going down a path that may not pay off is a risk itself. But because of the support of family and friends, it’s a path that I’m willing to risk for.
