Life & Work with Elizabeth Drysdale of Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Drysdale.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Elizabeth A. Drysdale won her first writing award at the age of seven and has followed it up with more awards, including the Bronze Quill for her novel, Out of Time, and 1st in the Olive Woolley Burt Awards in the category of YA First Chapters in the Quills League of Utah Writers Competition for her novel The Exile’s Promise. Elizabeth is an active member of the League of Utah Writers and an advocate for NaNoWriMo. She spent much of her childhood roaming through woods and climbing trees creating adventures to be someone else in. These childhood daydreams often find their way into her many novels, although with much more finesse and a lot less hanging upside down. After graduating from Excelsior College, she’s kept her nose in a book, either writing or reading, ever since. Elizabeth has a love of travel which often inspires her heroines to end up in places very different from where they started. Originally from the back woods of Massachusetts, she lives in a small town in Northern Utah with her husband, three sons, one dog, and eight chickens. Each day is filled with noise, more than a little dirt, and enough chaos to fill a hundred pages.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Writing is never a smooth road. When you start you think the hardest thing will be just finishing the book, then you realize that finishing was the easy part! I’ve had three different publishers, the first one went under before my work was ever published, the second decided not to continue publishing fiction after publishing two of my books, and now my publisher I’ve worked the longest with may have issues because of employees moving overseas. There’s always something. The only consistent thing is yourself and your words. You just have to keep trying and keep writing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an author. I write young adult fantasy. I’ve won several awards for my books that I’m very proud of. Out of Time and The Exile’s Promise were both Bronze Quill winners. The Exile’s Promise won a first chapter contest, Curse of the Forgotten got an honorable mention in a first chapter competition and was a finalist in the Swoony Awards. My ideas set me apart from others. In my books you’ll find concepts you won’t find anywhere else, which is fun because I write what I wish I could read. It’s the best feeling when I meet people who have read my books and enjoyed them, when people see in my work the same enjoyment that I felt when I was writing them.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family matters the most to me. I pursue my dreams to show my children that they can pursue theirs. Life is hard, but if you just keep going, anything can happen. If I had given up after the first round of agent rejections, I never would have know what it felt like to see my name in print. I want my kids to know what those moments feel like.
