Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Collett.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was 18, I was a nanny for a family between college semesters. She was the best little sleeper! She went down without crying, and slept as long as you expected and was so happy and well-rested throughout the day. Before I had started working for this family, they had hired a sleep consultant to help them and it totally changed their lives. I had never heard of a sleep consultant before, but I was so excited to learn about what they did! I started doing some research, and then a few years later I finished my training and became a certified sleep consultant for infants and toddlers with “Baby Sleep Consultant” based out of New Zealand. Shortly thereafter (in the spring of 2021), I officially started my Instagram page and business “Brighter Days Sleep Consulting”. It’s been a dream come true!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, it was slow getting started on social media, and I felt intimidated by the many, many other sleep consultants available. It seemed like, why would people pick me when I’m so new to this and have so few followers? I realized though that everyone has different personalities and that my followers and clients wanted to work with me because of me. After that, my page really took off and in no time, I was over 30 K followers.
Like all parenting topics, sleep training and other sleep-related issues are very polarized. Often times I get a lot of haters on my page, and that always makes me want to take a step back from social media and stop showing up. Whenever I have people come at me on social media though, I remind myself of the hundreds of families from all over the country and the world that I’ve been able to help in just a year I’ve been doing this and that helps me to keep going. I think most of the haters are simply misinformed about what I do and teach and that’s why they get so worked up. That is frustrating as well, but I try to just focus on the people who want my help.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a certified sleep consultant for children 0-4 years old. I help people who are experiencing sleep-related issues with their children such as; frequent wake ups overnight, early morning wake ups, short naps, bedtime battles, sleep training and all else imaginable. I have an Instagram page (@brighterdayssleep) where I post tips and I offer calls to help families troubleshoot through their sleep problems.
What I mostly do is take one on one clients. This is by far my favorite part! Families who need help reach out and book a consultation. I have them fill out a questionnaire explaining what’s going on and I write them a customized plan with recommendations to get on track. We talk through the plan together and then we get started! I’m there with them every step to answer questions, offer advice, make adjustments and cheer them on as they follow the plan and make the changes to their child’s sleep they’re wanting to.
I cover all aspects of the child’s wellness, not just sleep. I make sure their environment is good, they have an age-appropriate schedule and they’re getting the proper nutrition they need to sleep well. It’s all connected! Contrary to popular belief, I don’t tell people to put their child in the crib, close the door and let them cry all night. I tackle the cause of the sleep problems first, and then make sure parents are doing sleep training safely and correctly if they choose to.
I think the thing that sets me apart and what I’m most proud of in my business is how personalized my services are. I try to actually listen to parents when they tell me about the problems they’re experiencing and I work my hardest to find the best solution. I’m able to offer daily check ins to my clients where I see how they’re doing and what they need. There is so much information about children’s sleep on the internet and most people feel incredibly overwhelmed. I think my clients appreciate having someone to give them a step-by-step plan to follow that will actually address the issues and then talk to a real person and get support throughout the process. I hope to always be able to stay small enough to help families one on one!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you’re unhappy with where, when or how your child sleeps, there’s always something you can do to help! I offer a free introductory call to everyone so you can get to know me and figure out if we’re a good match before we work together. This is a recent review I received from a client here in Utah:
“Emma is such a lifesaver! Before we started sleep training with her plan, we were holding my son for hours every night while he slept, and praying that he would stay asleep when we laid him down. His naps were all over the place and usually short, and we were just exhausted.
I knew about ideal wake windows, nap lengths, and so on for his age, but applying those concepts seemed impossible. Emma gave us the missing pieces by suggesting changes to his nutrition and nap schedule so that he would be ready to sleep at night. She gave us a plan for gentle sleep training, and it worked! Within a single day, he was able to fall asleep on his own, with minimal tears. We are all sleeping more and better, and I feel like a new person.
We were also so grateful to find an affordable sleep consultant. There are so many expenses as new parents that all add up, and we knew we couldn’t afford hundreds of dollars for sleep training. Emma’s package was affordable, comprehensive, and successful! I loved having personal contact to go over our plan and ask questions. Everything was exactly what we needed. Thank you, Emma!!!”
