Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Roberts
Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my Bookstagram account during the heart of Covid lockdowns. A friend of mine was talking about a book account she followed, and I told her, “I read a lot, maybe I’d like to have a Bookstagram account one day.” When I caught myself saying that, I started my page the very same day – no time like the present to do something you want to do! 🙂
There’s a really fun book-obsessed community on Instagram that I never even knew was there until I started my account. I had a lot of fun connecting with strangers that, as it turned out, I had so much in common with! I didn’t tell anyone I knew in real life about the account and just felt a lot of freedom and fun geeking out over my favorite books and trying to take creative pictures of my bookshelves and dog.
My account grew steadily… and so did my bookshelves! We moved three separate times since 2020, and the bookshelves got more extravagant each time. When we put in floor-to-ceiling IKEA bookshelves, my following really grew – but it wasn’t until my husband and I bought a little old house in downtown Salt Lake City and had custom shelves with a Beauty-and-the-Beast-inspired ladder built that my following REALLY grew!
I still love talking about my favorite books with some of the kindest, smartest, most passionate people on the internet! To this day, the sense of community is my favorite thing about my Bookstagram account – that, and the excuse to buy any book I want 😉 hey, it’s all for content!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This might sound fake?! But creating a Bookstagram account has been SUCH a smooth, positive thing in my life. I swear, the book community is the kindest community out there. Sometimes I get burnt out and I don’t feel like showing up online as much, but whenever I return to it I’m welcomed back with open arms (and plenty of recommendations for new releases I may not have heard about while I was MIA!)
Being a bookish content creator isn’t my “job” – I’m a freelance copywriter and make most of my income writing website pages and content for brands. But I’ve had some really cool work and collaboration opportunities come from Instagram as well, and that’s a cherry on top for sure!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
[NOTE: You reached out to me via my Instagram account, @rightbookatya, so I’m focusing primarily on that! I’m also a freelance copywriter, so if you’d like more information on that, just let me know!]
I’m a bookish content creator over at @rightbookatya! I’m a book reader and collector who’s built a following sharing photos of my dreamy bookshelves 🙂 I love to read – mostly fiction, but as far as specific fiction genres go, I try to read the best of everything! I’ve worked with companies like Book of the Month, Amazon, and various publishers, but for the most part, @rightbookatya is a fun creative outlet for me.
My “day job” is also a cool, creative-adjacent one – I have my own copywriting business and spend my time writing website copy, product descriptions, ads, and content for various brands. My niche is vibrant, female-focused brands that communicate with a fun, conversational, witty voice – much like how my own IG has turned out!
My goal is to combine my love of fiction, my writing skills, and my publishing connections and publish a novel one day… watch this space!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you’re thinking of starting your own bookstagram… DO IT. It’s such a welcoming community (message me and I’ll give you a follow!) and you get back as much as you give to it and more. Reading can be such a solitary, isolating hobby, but the internet has really helped connect readers and discover how much in common we have. And it’s so much more fun to be part of creating that content than just consuming it all the time! You’ll find tons of great book recommendations, friends, and motivation to stick to your own reading goals!
