Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Sheridan.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey there, I’m Hannah, the face behind the lens at HS Photography! When I was a kid, I was given a Barbie Polaroid camera for Christmas. I took pictures of everything and everyone. From there, I started buying disposable cameras, waterproof cameras, and eventually upgraded to a digital point-and-shoot. I was always the girl with the camera. I brought it to birthday parties, pep rallies, school dances, and anywhere else I went as a middle/high schooler. In high school, I decided to use the money I could have put towards a class ring to buy my first DSLR camera and after college, I upgraded once more and started investing in lens’. This upgrade is what really changed the game for me. I drove across the country with a friend and got a lot of practice taking landscape and nature photography. When COVID came around and I started working remotely, I took the opportunity to get into portrait and boudoir photography and I never looked back. I am so grateful to all of my friends and family that lent me their time to practice and the clients that have become like family. Starting a business has been both the most challenging and most fulfilling experience of my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As someone who has never taken a photography class in their life, I definitely had a bit of a learning curve when it came to understanding the manual settings on my camera. After lots of practice and youtube videos, my confidence started to grow along with my creative energy. On the other side of things, running a business was not something I was prepared for. So many hours spent behind the scenes and so much money poured into something that I’m not necessarily profiting off of at the end of the day. However, I do enjoy finding ways to be creative on a budget, and my love of thrifting has really helped on that end. Hopefully, one day soon, I will be able to make this a full time gig, but for now, I am loving every second of learning ins and outs of growing a business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a portrait and travel photographer who specializes in couples, creative/editorial, and boudoir. I am most proud of providing a safe and supportive environment where my clients can feel completely comfortable and natural in front of the lens. I don’t just want to provide stunning photos, I want them to enjoy the experience as a whole.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! Get out there every day and spend a little time working on what you love. It doesn’t have to be perfect but every time you get your camera out, you will grow a little bit more in skill and confidence. Don’t wait around for someone to hire you, put yourself out there and go for the opportunities that present themselves. At worst, it will be a learning experience, at best, you might just change your life.
